I'm worried; is the map going to be instanced? Or wide open?

  1. Most people here seem too fancinated by the idea of a 40k MMO that they forget the game is anything but that.
  2. Open world would be nice but you always forget that the technology is not available to EC. Yes Planetside got it and they wont sell it our give out any details... never. Sony developed their open world engine since Planetside 1 (2003) and no idea how long before, so we have to wait and stop asking constantly

If it can be made before, it can be made again.
Korel, Crioxus and Attrocitus like this.
  4. Yes with many years of development, not in 1 year and not in 2. I think they developed the engine for Planetside for over 5 years and it was Sony, they have a big budget.

I have faith in these developers. This game is far from finished, so if they put effort to it, they could make it happen

  7. It wasn't Kickstarter funded. There was a Founders programme linked to the Alpha access, but that's as far as it went.

And oh, there was a lot of raging at the time when it was announced it wouldn't be possible tech-wise to have a viable open world at launch, it would have to follow on after. Much raging indeed. But once the fury passed, most of us accepted that if that was the reality, it was better to live with it than throw our toys out of the pram and wish it wasn't so.

The devs have always been clear that the open world vision has never been dropped, just delayed. And they gave a lot of notice of this. So it's not quite the same level of going back on your word as, say, David Braben pulling the offline mode from Elite Dangerous about three weeks before launch, then trying to fudge refund handling in the hope of discouraging the horde of furious kickstarter backers causing him financial difficulties. ;)

No-one's saying it can't be done at all - the issue is whether it can be done on the current launch schedule. Behaviour aren't a gigantic studio, they don't have a bottomless pit of funds they can tap into if they need an extra two years for technological development. Their choice, as I understand it, boiled down to "launch without open world and find a way to make this work afterwards" or "abandon the project".

I have faith that they will get there too. But any expectation that they can do this for launch is firmly in cloud cuckoo land, barring Behaviour experiencing a minor miracle during development.

I actually know about a Kickstarter project who made his own engine, supports seamless zones (open world) and instances and gets about 500 players up close in Alpha state!

So it can be done ...

  10. And how was the graphic? More than colorless blocks? Big areas with buildings and working classes and gameplay? I dont think so
