My Chaos Marine won't be thoughtless. But he will be a monster. On a related train of thought, I think most every character of every faction could be considered a monster. Chaos, Necrons, and Orks are rather blatant in that regard, but the Eldar wipe out entire planets to further their own schemes and have unfathomable elitist prejudices regard other species, the Imperium is a theocratic dictatorship which, on the best day, sacrifices 1000 souls to keep the Golden Throne running, the Tau have a maxed-out extremist "with us or against us" mentality... I mean, sure, there are races who fight for "good" or can be perceived as good because they combat blatant evil but even a cursory glance at their methods and beliefs would convince most anyone that they are still monstrous. And frankly, that's one of the things I find most compelling about the 40k universe: there are no good guys. And as far as this game is concerned, I think every character is going to be a monster; you just have to decide what kind of monster you want to be. Additionally, if you read this and your first thought is "but my guy fights for the right reasons" then I would point out there is nothing so dangerous as an evil individual who believes him or herself to be righteous.
I want to be a follower of Khorne because of the martial honor aspect and well i could hardly follow a different god after my gene father Angron became a prince of Khorne. I intend to be honorable and to seek worthy enemies, but i fully intend to occasionally become lost in blood lust and go berserk only to come out of these episodes lamenting the actions i undertook and remembering my legion of brother world eaters before our fall to Khorne.
Not technically true. The Black Legion supplement introduced a bunch of new Black Legion offshoots and warbands, one of whom is known as the Wolves of Horus. After Horus's death, they were those who wished to return to the traditions of the Luna Wolves and are part of a group of warbands known as the thrice-damned traitors. Obviously they're still chaos-corrupted but they have their own goals and motivations seperate from the Black Legion.
I like this thread. It's good to see this side of Chaos and i wish it was seen more in the books. Most books i've read just show the mindless insanity of Chaos and not what it truly represents, the whole concept of endless possibilities as opposed to Order. It's why i'd like to see Malal being a stronger force compared to the other Gods. I'd say there are two sides in each side of the coin. Just like Chaos can have a "good" or at least neutral side, so can Order have a bad side and i think this is seen in the books in the Inquisition and the fanatic devotion/witch hunt that the Emperor was striving to rid humanity from. If the Chaos side contained more of the elements that you guys mentioned above in the book, i'd be way more compelled to play Chaos.
Aha! I see such brilliance, it warms my heart. I also do enjoy the role play, it's good to see. Some good points have been made, especially in the address that there are no "good" factions within the Warhammer universe. I would like to point out that there are good people within the factions, those who aren't bent on genocide and conquest, though that rather coincides with Imperials, the Chaos Legions (too rarely in my opinion), the Tau, and the Eldar, since the rest of the factions are lost (I don't count the new Necron codex, it hurts too much to read.) I just hope to see a champion rise from the midst of combat, rather that be myself or a being invented by GW that doesn't strive for deplorable ends from the side of Chaos, if they ever accept my works into the Black Library. Keep this going, let it be known that the Legions of Chaos are far more than the thoughtless butchers of yesteryear, that more stirs the heart than act of war.
Change, in all its aspects is a good change. A Tzeentchian is never a thoughtless monster. Rather, he is the most thoughtful.
The lord of change pulls the strings of the infinite universe, his will influences all things, all living things are his puppets. His intent is unknowable, his desires unfathomable, we are all but pawns to be used at his whim. To imply such human values as "good" or "evil" are held by a Chaos god is a naive notion, but in the eyes of Tzeentch you make for a good pawn, you are another of the trillions he wields to enact his plans. All should take comfort in that no matter your choose to do, you are part of our lord's plan. ---------- Though I do think that Chaos are often misrepresented as being the typical "evil" race, they simply represent the "chaos-good/neutral/evil" in the DnD style of things, they cover the entire scale of the living, from good to evil. I think the Necrons would be the closest to a pure evil faction in the game.
