I still play Planetside 2. It certainly is not dead. To make a game thats going to last...I dont know. Thats the secret sauce right there. All I can say is make the game fun and dont try to fuck me too hard with microtransactions and I will play it for years.
It's pretty underground, you've probably never heard of it. They say only ubernerds and developers have ever said its name aloud.
Launching a broken game on steam the same day you go on vacation crippled PS2, since then the game has been bleeding players...
And the fact that PS2 has been the same since release other than a few micro content updates...and a few micro fail updates that moved it back to 2012 release standards again. With them its 2 steps forward, then 2 steps backwards.
That's still better than Mythic's approach to patching with WAR, which was 1 step forward, 1 step back, turn around three times then jump backwards.
