The game is primarily a PvP game. As such I don't want explicit character progression. Extensive equipment customization, absolutely, but nothing akin to straight stat improvements and the like. As you play more you should have access to a larger number of pieces of equipment and forms of specialization, unlocking new game play options, but you shouldn't be strictly better than you were before. Just have more varied options. PvP doesn't need to be skewed towards more experienced players (who should intrinsically have the advantage by virtue of greater skill at the game and not need any extra advantages), nor does there need to be unnecessary barriers to entry into PvP. New players should be able to pick up the game and get right into the action without having to grind levels/equipment, or without being at a strict disadvantage to established players.
customization is something i really love in games so would love for it to be very extensive and detailed. Not very picky with character progression. Would be just fine with standard stats all around.
Yeah... I understand customization, but increasing in size... becoming more mutated through powers of the warp... would make more sense as something that happens over time... and cannot be reversed. Either take away the emphasis on the gradual inclination... or don't have it. Just have one of those Transmorgifying vendors like in WoW. Where your level / previous Wargear attained dictates your options. And yeah... it wouldn't be called the same thing as WoW called it... but we know what it is. Like on TV when they don't say Mcdonald's... but you know it's meant to be Mcdonald's.
Customization is important within reason. It has to be within the scope of that faction. I know I want the runes and fetishes for the SW. But they should be earned. signify some accomplishment and be able to be placed in various locations within reason. Some races should get more diversity than others. Orcs should have a wide range or things while SM should not. But I think that some customization is important so people feel unique.
They said in other topics for the similar subject that they will put in as much customization as they can within a certain limit where it is not too heavy on performance. Everybody will be able to make as unique characters as they can, and they expecting us to do. I for one, cant wait to put my claws on the character creator.
Sound a bit what I had in mind also but I do want a small amount of extra level from the experience and time put into the game in addition to extensive equipment customization.
I wanna agree with what a lot of people have been saying - character progression should not directly increase the power of your char, as this is a PVP game...with no level restrictions in a lobby.. Planetside had a great system, where levelling up simply gave you the ability to specialise what your character could do, specialising in being a sniper or engineer for example (It would be needed to be executed better than planetside's system - there were some OP guns in that game)
Customization and progression is a huge part of what keeps you coming back months after release. The real trick will be balancing everything so that a player that has been playing for two years wont completely one-shot a new player and discourage him from playing.
I'm all for maximum cosmetic customisation, but like others I'd be against any major skill upgrades where the difference between a veteran and a new player isn't their skill, reaction time or just knowledge of the game, but rather the equipment they have.
It is exactly 50% of game for me. Easily achievable cap is the same as no character progression at all, thus game becomes MOBA instead of MMO in this case, thereby such a game dies in me quite soon. I love to see result of my actions (all kinds of them), I love see my character progress and aptitudes + visuals upgrades as rewards. EVE is very good one example of what I'm talking about.
