I understand what you're getting at and agree for the most part. But you also have to think about the experience as the thing that's making you 'stronger'. The primary thing that separates a veteran Space Marine from a new Space Marine is experience. Not necessarily the gear he is given. Given the opportunity a new Space Marine could take out a veteran just as easily as a veteran could take out him. A bullet through the head will kill a veteran just like a newbie. The difference being a veteran finds himself in a situation in which he can kill the less experienced more often than the less experienced do. The veteran is also better at avoiding bad situations in which he might be killed, especially by less experienced Space Marines/Players. You're asking for 'buffs' or better equipment to reflect being a veteran/experienced player when your experience should already reflect that in game. Think of any game, given the same equipment, 9 times out of 10, the veteran will best the newbie; maybe even more than that. Just because you're a veteran doesn't mean you should be immune to being killed by newbies. Your experience is already your advantage over them, to gain even more of an advantage with better armor/stats/etc. would be a little overkill. Given the right opportunity a newbie should absolutely be able to kill a veteran. If you're a veteran and you're constantly being killed by newbies, it's not the games fault for not giving you good equipment, it's your fault; maybe you're just not good at the game. Just because you've been fighting for 10,000 years doesn't mean a bullet coming from the rifle of a newbie shouldn't hurt you. The age and skill gap is represented, it's your experience. Now I understand earning iron halos, etc., etc. and I'm not opposed to that. Earning things like that, that are lore and the like, are fine with me. I just don't want veterans being strangely stronger than newbies for no reason other than, "Well... I'm a veteran so +100 health, +5% speed, and my armor is magically stronger." If you have a justification for such augmentations (Terminator armor, etc.) I've got no problem with that.
I fully support any customization that allows me to be different from next of kin Both in the cosmetical department and in the gameplay too I hate when the game dont give you option to diversify your playstyle and guides you through very limited choices of playing
And everything you mentioned is absolutely right, which is why I had the first paragraph in which I stated: However, I wasn't referring to time spent playing. I was referring to late tier character progression. Look at Space Marine MP. Sure, you start off with the ability to kill someone who's played a lot more than you. But once you start playing more and more you begin to unlock perks or more armor modifiers that make killing people easier and make you tougher to kill. Like Kraken Bolts or Artificer Armor. Things like that. Not health buffs.
Okay, cool. I get you now. It seemed to me at the time like you were saying, "If we don't have better weapons and armor then what's to stop the newbies from killing us? We need the upgraded weapons and armor to make us better than the newbies." haha
Customization is very important to me, i don't want to play a game where everyone looks the same even with different armor and weapons on.
That was a very well thought out post. What I would like the "veteran" system to be would to open up new loadouts/gear sets. example : Basic Assault Marine Chainsword and boltpistol after a certain amount of kills/exp gained you then unlock the plasma pistol and power fist loadout options and so on. Now I would also like to see your proficiency with a weapon increase over use. So instead of using the powerfirst you stick with the chainsword, and through extended use you will swing faster/ be more accurate/ crit more or unlock new moves? or something else entirely. These shouldn't be massive leaps in power making you run about like a god , but incrementally improving the way you character is with them weapons rather than making the weapons themselves better. Not sure if that made sense rereading it
Well unfortunately that's kinda not possible. If you join the Ultramarines you will look like an Ultramarine. There is no getting around that at least on that point.
I am all for extensive character progression. For me, the cosmetic changes are just a minor issue in the games (in spite of loving the fluff of w40k), so it wont hold interested me long enough. Id rather prefer character progression system that would reflect this fluff. -------------------- So, as a day-one newbie battle-brother, you will get your bolter and chainsword. You know how to shoot and start the chainsword. ----200 years later----- You got still the same bloody (really BLOODY now!) bolter and chainsword, using the same ammo, the same powerarmor etc., but now you can your aim is much better, you can easily hit the critical spots in opponents armor, thus getting those critical hits, you change targets quickly, you reload fast. With your chainsword you now know large set of openings, feints, counterattacks, parries... Regarding your physical condition, you are almost the same as the novice (hp pool speaking), maybe with some little increase to your resistances (psychic and physical resilience due to large number of battle experience and overcomed injuries), but a heavy bolter round through your head will kill you the same as the novice. ----------------------- I would like to see this kind of progression implemented, not just the collection of different layouts and weapon systems which is a) not very fluff friendly anyway; b) not a longterm progression system that will hold the players interest long enough...
