I am never a fan of team deathmatch or FFA deathmatch, and i really like holding points, escort something or attack/defend game modes in general, your aim is not to kill as manya s you can but to achieve a greater goal, and during those moments we keep it going forward, i hate hearing "omg kill steal, i so had him, now i am so freaking away from l33t title" herp herp derp, insert none comprehensible insults". Psychopski has the right idea about how to do this.
A personal ranking means nothing, maybe a strike force ranking based on points given for successfully defend/capture facilities will be better.
Quit whining will you? How does personal stats ruin teamplay? Players need to be awarded for their achievements , both individually and as a fanction. If the game is by definition oriented in massive outdoors pvp , the pitiful excuses for camping etc are thin air. How will they gang you when there's an army behind you? And in case you folks dont notice , people who camp , do it for the fun of it , just like a troll doesnt expect a medal for trolling. A player is and will always be an individual. We wanna compete , we wanna have fun , we wanna be first on the list of badass players on the map. Imo those who are negative to personal stats are negative because they dont want to be judged and have their mediocre stats visible. Whats the big deal , what if your stats are mediocre? As you said its a teamplay , all that matters is to be important enough for your team. And besides , its a game , its for fun , they dont pay you to play so its ok to suck...
You should be rewarded for your achievements but not in a way that distracts from the core gameplay and encourages kill farming over objective victory. Any achievements should be for TEAMPLAY not farming your KDA
i'm looking forward to a purely strategic mmo, i hope that the dev boys can find and implement ways to discourage n00b camping and kdr clowns, such as the team play achievements and such. Scenario objective: Advance from deployment zone A Locate and eliminate enemy deployment zone point B Player Z sitting in a heavy bolter emplacement defending point A may not necessarily have a team play element, and may not even see combat ! He is performing a vital role for his faction, in ensuring the deployment zone is secure, yet the player might just as well go make a coffee in some cases. In closed map games you have spawn zones, random spawn or npcs defending your base. I can't see these working in an open world, non-instanced game, and devs have said no npc except for tyranid. Would the squad commander need to specify exp rewards for defenders? If dzA is captured by the enemy, I assume it would need to be retaken from players deployed from a previous point.
I admittedly overreacted a bit and am sorry for that. My point, or rather, worry is that personal kill counts or K/D ratios will result in what I personally liken to the TF2 Sniper playerbase - a group of people that, while being good at killing others from afar, generally contribute little or nothing at all to the team. By that I do not even mean pushing the cart in Payload Maps or stealing the intel on CTF maps (because they plainly aren't made for such tasks), but their sheer unwillingness to risk their own lifes for the good of their faction, fearing that a single additional death on their scoreboard would threaten their K/D ratio and question their "m4d sn0|p4h 5killz". Of course this is not true for all snipers, but of ten snipers, six behave like this, two are actually good and competent teamplayers, and the other two are newbies.
I like the idea of it mostly being a feture you have to actively look for in a players profile as opposed to somthing shoved into your face. Stats are nice in that they create some compeition between players, so im all for them being seen. Say top 25 in each Faction, Sub-Faction, Strike-Force. If this game is going to be more about tacital consideration it would be nice that you gain recgonization for not just a K/D spread. Love the idea of people getting "points" for being defenders/support/drivers/leaders. I personally am one of those people who like the Tanks and Vehicles and have no problem driving around a battlefield in a transport blasting away with a Anti-Personal weapon but generally just trying to get me and my guys where they need to be. Being that Heavy Support isnt exactly living in the spotlight but when it comes time for you to be needed you can really shine, people willing to go above and beyond like this should be rewarded. I always liked the idea of the rewards being though the sideways unlocking of abilites. You drive that Rhino like a champ and have done it well for awhile, congrats now you can drive the pred! Oh what you also drove that like a champ for awhile too? Your Termie friends are going to love your new pimped out Land Raider! I think Battlefield 3 did somthing similar to this? To answer OP, PvP kills SHOULD be displayed, but they shouldn't be the end all be all. Would love to also see Kill vs specific factions, Missions/defended area, points in supporting/different classes, etc.
This is a reasonable worry and i know what you mean cause i used to play a lot of tf. Theres always "that" guy. But the way i see it , these guys are useless no matter what they pick. So , picking sniper and staying away from the combat at least keeps them out of our feet. And plus , good players always always own these noobs. They dont know how to move and where to stand and in resault they are getting constantly pwned. Tbh i dont think its possible for an MMO to be proof of idiots , its just how well the game deals with them. A way more serious problem would not be the noob snipers. It would be the pro ones. You know , those little no-lifers who spents whole days just camped in a tight spot , headshoting everyone and typing "l33t h34dsh0t n000bz!". I think the best way to deal with those is to have a map that has not cramped spots for snipers to use. You know , multiple entrances to every spot. If you wanna be sniper , great but be a man , dont root in a glitched spot and act like you are pro.
