Spookums is right, if you want to be chiefly a melee character then the controller will feel much better, but if you're choosing chiefly ranged then keyboard and mouse are the way to go.

What are people's opinions on textured grip vs. stabilising grip for shoota's?
  3. I like stabilizing grip. Less spread while strafing = more hits. We don't really have any Shoota weapons that benefit from first-shot accuracy.

Oh sorry, meant the grip that gives you less recoil for continuous shots.
  5. I got both during this campaign and experimented back and forth- I found the grip with increased accuracy while moving to be better in most situations because it is rare that you have the opportunity to hold still and dakka- there are lots of places without much cover and what cover is out there won't keep you alive as long as strafing would. Combat is mostly short ranged, and sitting still in a short-range fight is a death sentence.

If the game was such that you could sit tight in a covered position and fire outward over a longer distance, the reduced spread between shots grip would be better. The shoota boy doesn't often have that luxury, however, and improved firing on the move is more applicable.

And is there a point to the stamina wargear and trinkets at all? I've experimented a bit with them and I'm still not sure how I feel about them.

Additional stamina isn't really wasted per se, and there certainly are times where having more stamina can be a major boon... but there it is, additional stamina is usually situational and most of the time you will pull through fine enough with the base stamina and regeneration.

Shoota - Ive always had great success with the Rodeo shoota and dead shiny shoota. Rodeo shoota is really good for close to mid range shooting but mostly close range if you catch your opponant of guard and managed to get the first shot of it will down a LSM/CSM first even if they have Storm bolters its also really good if you have maniac melee charging you and even better if you get a Dbash on them just remember to aim for the head!
Dead shiny shoota when with the right mods i find to be an a great mid range weapon (atleast from what i remember been like 2 months since i last played so going of memory here) Bust mostly being a successfull shoota is positioning, team work and not afraid to get into melee with your fists. alot of mistakes i saw was shoota's shooting the enemy in the back sure it makes sense but if you can a heavy and quick attack with the fist (especially if you have the added pen mod for it) actually downs most enemies keeps you hidden of the enemy radar and makes you less noticed also helps alot more with your melee buddies

Slugga! - My fav class i normally run with the dead shiny choppa with added pen and impact mod i know alot of people would disagree with me and i do see the downsides to this but honestly it has worked in my favor quite a lot gives you the added much needed pen, and the impact mod lets you survive certain encounters longer and trust me that added few seconds could mean the difference in you going down or the enemy going down another good one to use is the chain choppa with pen and lifesteal or even the electric club weapon varient we have (name escapes me) my play style is normally with the clan i protect loota's and doc's they are what keep you
    A) alive!
    B) protected from other heavy weapons
you can also protect the shoota's
a good method is that i actually stalk (use my allies) as bait for the enemy he goes down a dumb enemy will execute him and you have a free kill on your hands
another good method is stay out of sight let your team mates with big guns be noticed then flank the amount of times i took down 3-5 enemies cause they were so heavily focused (tunnel vision) on one spot where my allies were they completly forgot to check there flanks you might get the occasional one or two who are smart but then its all down to skill and some luck if you kill them or they kill you!

all the other advice is also quite sound but you will just have to try everything you will eventually find something that suits your play style just remember teamwork! and you will have fun no matter what!

EDIT: for the slugga the best side weapon is the dakka slugga or the zip slugga depending on what you want Dakka slugga for the damage and good rate of fire (not to mention if you hit the head they go down in like 3-4 shots) and zip slugga for watching the enemy panic cause like someone said its basically a mega uzi and ive been on the other end not to mention it deals a nice decent amount of damage which is always nice!

I personally don't see much point? Stamina builds can work, but i think our Iframes are a little buggy. Saying that, I've never tried a stam build (Wer not da wunz dat dance aroun' leave dat to tha eldar!) Playing against Orks, i have seen them work quite well though their roll didn't iframe them from my stormbolter the way the SM roll protects them from a direct rokkit hit, or rolling over a grenade.

It's good for getting eldar grenades off you, which usually require two rolls to get rid of, then the third just puts distance between you and it.

It really depends on play style? I find it better to just put the points in something to take me more tanky that's more reliable than ork iframes in terms of mitigation.
