So I decided to use my 10,000 free RTC on the heart stoppa, since I'm working my way through the 5k chests I figured it would be a while before I reach the zzap gun.

I don't know how normal zzap guns work but with the heart stoppa you can only shoot it at an actual target, the moment you are not aiming at an enemy target it refuses to charge, and as it's a hit scan weapon that means every time I shoot it I'm guaranteed to hit my target. the downside it that it still takes a pretty large amount of shots to take out a rhino if you are not hitting the rear armor. I was hitting a rhino's side armor and it took probably around 9 or 10 shots to kill it, fortunately it wasn't moving. Is this how normal zzap guns work?

I've actually found it more effective as a sniper than a vehicle killer, as I can sit on a tower/balcony and snipe off targets pretty well with it, I just need to keep the reticle on the target long enough to charge.

Major downside is that I'm useless in melee or short range combat. Don't even have a combat knife, if I'm ever actually found by the enemy I'm dead, the charge up is too long to shoot people at close range and it's easy for them to break line of sight by dodging around.

That's pretty much how every zzap gun and lascannon work in EC, yes. Although some times, due to lag probably, you can miss a shot if your target moves right as you're firing.

The kannon is the best AV weapon in my experience. It not only does good damage to vehicles, you can plaster infantry at even extreme ranged with no trouble (just aim slightly above where you want to actually hit for people behind cover and such).
