Gameplay: The "reality" Of Fighting In The 41st Millennium.

  1. If you've been following EC over the last several months, surely you've heard Behavior state that they want players to feel as if they were an actual Space Marine/CSM/Ork/Eldar fighting in the 41st Millennium.

This is one enduring concept that got me really excited about Eternal Crusade when I first heard about the game being in development. I feel that immersion and the difficulty level in many of today's games take the back seat to over the top UI "enhancements" and dumbed down game play. Instant gratification and "easy mode" kills seems to be all the rage, and many developers seem to cater to this crowd exclusively.

It seemed Behavior was going to buck the latest trends and blaze their own trail by placing immersion at the forefront. A most welcomed concept in my opinion, and quite refreshing in lieu of the myriad of "copy cat" shooters on the market today.

My question for Miguel is... How does your concept of making us feel as if we're actually fighting in the 41st Millennium, fit in with what we are seeing in Pre Alpha?

    1. Generic COD/Halo/BF4 style Minimap showing persistent locations of enemy players.
    2. Hovering icons over capturable objectives. These icons can be seen though buildings, through mountains, and can be seen from great distances(500-1000 meters approximately).
    3. Red tags over enemy players, showing health status.
    4. A "don't shoot" icon[IMG] appears over friendly players, when you aim at them.

Its my understanding from the Lore and the novels I've read, that Space Marines rely on inner squad communications, hand and arm signals to fix enemy locations, not minimaps and red dots. They use maps and cardinal directions(N, S, E, W) to navigate to objectives. There are no red tags over enemy targets, nor is their health status known. They have to visually determine friend versus foe, without the aid of "dont shoot" icons or red name tags. ie is that an Ork or a Space Marine?

I'm just wondering how you intend to fully immerse us in the 40K universe, while dumbing down game play and destroying immersion by adding in many of the most popular gimmicky UI tricks in the industry to your game? From what I'm seeing, it appears to be COD/Halo/BF4 in a 40K setting. I've played, and enjoyed numerous other games that don't have ANY of these UI elements present.

You must have missed when SM describe how they see "runes" marking friendlies and enemy positions, I don't want it as intrusive as it looks right now but what it won't fit the setting for sure is no indication whatsoever. This game it's not supposed to be something even close to Red Orchestra or ARMA.

Fully agree, these features need to find their way to the trashcan asap.
These features casualize the experience allot for me personally, and take allot of possible fun.

1)I can live with this to a point, only when you faction actually spots enemies that is. And it only lasts for a small amount of time if someone just passes a glance over them so as to not have sneaky insertion teams perma-revealed to everyone just cause someone moved their mouse over them, perhaps not even acknowledging them at all.
But perhaps easier to not have it at all.

2)Agree, again it hurts small groups that try to go behind the line and do thing. Their talk of special design for bases, where you will need to complete multiple things within a base to actually capture it (cut supply, power etc) will go down the drain if the enemy is completely aware of everything happening in their base without actually having eyes everywhere.

3)I can see it turning into a mess of hundreds of bars when we have those thousand player battles, i think its uneeded. However, whilst uneeded they need to have good visual ques for effects. We already know there will be debuffing of sorts for certain classes, and since we wont be able to click on enemies and actually see if we applied the effect (since effects will be applied gradually, as explained in livestream #1 by Brent) we need some good ways to see these effects.

4)Kinda indifferent on this one though. I do agree its kinda meh and not really 40k in nature, but the popup turns something which can be a full clip from a noob firing at you before he realizes his stupidity into a single loud "beep" after a single bullet that makes him aware that he is committing something he shouldnt. Yes people should be more aware, but i dont think many will, and perhaps even blame the lack of such ques for their trolling. Effectively being all "i didnt know T_T" when they totally did.

  4. Gameplay > lore.
Thats just me though, I want to be able to still play the game, but also have good immersion.

Fully agree with this, this game is a MMOFPS not a survival game or walking sim.

Exactly. Gameplay trumps lore every time. So sweet Nurgle in his Garden don't give me large scale Halo skinned in 40K clothes. Give me complex and interesting gameplay that's going to keep me hooked. It being an MMOFPS is not an excuse for it to have simplistic and uninvolved gameplay.
  7. its an mmotps BTW.. not an fps ;)

To adress points 3. and 2.:
I think spotting should be a thing, just constrict it. For example you have to take an auspex/gitfinda/eldar shizzle in your utility slot, as opposed to medkit, extra ammo or whatever else you can take there. (I think utility slot has been confirmed)
Therefore they will be a use to the team but constrict themselves.

    But we must always remember:
Alpha is alpha and not a representation of the final product.

Sure but it's also about pure aesthetics, all these markers, bars simply don't look good and don't help the immersion.
