I'm not sure how I feel about any of this.

On one hand I'm excited to see what Behaviour Interactive can produce, on the other I'm extremely worried that this is the beginning of the nickle and diming that has become a trend in the video games industry since 2007. Remember what happened to CCP/EVE and their Monocle debacle, or Piranhas' MechWarrior Online and their golden mechs? Massive community backlash and a loss of player faith, which immediately led to less people playing. Don't let greed get the better of you, Behaviour. Picture related.

I don't know about MechWarrior, but the debacle surrounding EVE Online was way bigger than just about monocles.
Plus, EVE and EC just aren't comparable, as EVE is P2P and EC is B2P. Behavior will need an income other than selling boxes to keep their servers up and running. As long as it's just cosmetics I honestly would not give a rats ass about Behavior selling expensive stuff. But if it's a chainsword with stats then I won't play the game.

Even if that chainsword is a sidegrade and not an upgrade? As they've made clear will be the case for anything with stats. I personally don't mind if that's the case, the whole point is avoiding Pay-to Win.

Having for example the same gun that fires ice rays and causes a bit of slowing instead of a gun that fires... fire with burning effects, would that matter? Technically the fire weapon does more damage because of DoT, but the ice weapon causes a bit of slowing, depending on your strategy one might be better than the other. I think something like this would be okay, I don't think it should be so black and white so as to say "if it has stats then I won't play the game". IMHO

Yes. Even if that chainsword is a sidegrade. Nothing with stats should be behind a paywall.
And technically, the weapon you mentioned could be a P2W-item in some situations. That big Nob that comes rushing at you might not be able to make it, just because you paid 20€ for a slow that allowed other allies to shoot the crap out of him. Now had you been using the free gun that shoots fire then he might've made it and bashed your skull in.

That is assuming that the slow effect was exclusive to premium items. Maybe it's not the best example, the kind of example the devs give is a gun that does 50 damage every second instead of one that does 100 damage every two seconds. I guess it comes down to preference, I would still give the devs the chance to show us how it all plays out and give the proper feedback if we think it needs fixing.
