I say nay, since we all know how PS2's flyers turned out. Also, in 40k they would literally be flying tanks, which would be more than enough trouble to shoot down without them being ungodly invincible.
Yeah well, Planetside is actually one of the worser examples, simply beacause rocket pods are horrendously unbalanced. When they would be at least a bit realistic, they could cause massive destruction. You would probably start off as an unarmed recon Pilot and would have to unlock weapons and other, bigger stuff.
I would prefer no manual flyers. Then there would have be some type of AA added like homing rockets. In TT, players don't have to worry about how fast and far the aircraft is to be able to hit it.
Adding a whole new type of play style to the game would open a massive can of worms in terms of game mechanics and balance. They would be a nice way to get around long distances but I wouldn't want to see them in combat. I'd much more prefer really well polished ground based gameplay.
Same where, developing such a huge game (and not releasing an early beta like SOE did) must be quite an effort. But it would sure be a nice tweak if they could get it to work out fine.
At most, maybe a transport flyer for faster long distance travel, but even that would require some extra balancing and could be a pain. I'm more in favor of none. They're not really needed and in my opinion they represent a very small part of 40k.
I agree, it would be best to balance things such as infantry combat first, before adding in vehicles, the aircraft.
Great for an expansion but probably not so good right now. I would like to see some fliers like Thunderhawks that would drop off reinforcements though. Maybe have them be npc driven with the players in the hold and they can program the lading coordinates preflight then just ride it down to the planet.
The problem I see with that is either you make them invincible during flight in which case it feel cheap, or you make them able to be shot down in which case people camp the flight paths and get free kills.
