the way i see it, and that is as far as the internet can provide any light on this subject, which is almost none. GDW and GW did as was said before, GW told GDW "hey, go ahead and try this" as they did a few times during their rogue trader days and not only with GDW, dragon magazine was there as well (and possibly others). and its not situation 1 nor 2, its more like situation 1.5, it can be considered canon but at the same time it is not, for it was ordered by GW, yet not completly acknowledged or just experimentation. more importantly it was for a very outdated situation of the warhammer 40k universe, the rogue trader era, where a lot of things happened, and a lot of things are left as is to maybe be used in the future as reference material or be buried under the sands of time to never be used as canon. to only be referred to as a test, or fun thought process, what if scenarios etc... this kind of canon/non-canon information is there to be found sparcely (someone collected some here: http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=85257) but it isnt readily accepted nor acknowledged as true canon by GW. even the fanbase is divided, because when you read it, some of it makes sense and some of the stuff really doesnt... i hope i was of any help. if not, i wont bother you anymore then EDIT: you might like these links as they explain how warhammer canon is looked upon... or at least try to explain and sort the vortex of madness it is. http://www.boomtron.com/2011/03/grimdark-ii-loose-canon/ http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1141571&postcount=22 http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=74530
I know what you mean, but you still cant change it. I can not remember who but some author recruited some recruits into the ranks of Space Wolves Scouts in his book, while they are supposed to be Blood Claws. You cant change that. It was published. Was it a mistake, yes. But it is still there. Officially it happened. Same as GW saying they dont like the squats. They existed. You cant change that... so they killed them. That is officially fixing a 'mistake' you have made. While GW can't fix every canon conflict that has been created over the years, that is what they are conflicts within the canon. You can change the rules as time goes by, but you cant change the history of the lore. Even if GW came out with the official list of all conflicts and said, "opps, we did not mean these. sorry" it is done. whether canon is accepted or even referenced makes no difference to what is canon. That is the trouble with non-fiction. When the creators approve what is said, it is done. It is not like a math book where if someone says 2+2=5, you can cross it out because logic/history/mathematics has already defined what is correct and what is not. This is all illogical. It is fiction and as such it all makes no sense. That is my point. Whether we agree with it or not. It is there. Whether you accept it or not the creator said at one point that it happened. We can ignore it now, but it doesn't change anything. The only way to 'get rid of' them would be for GW to officially come out and say, 'they all died in this battle and their geneseed stock was lost' just because there is stuff we dont like (personally i do not like the legion of the damned and similar stuff) it is still there. Even if we all, including GW, ignore it, it is still canon. I hope that makes sense. Like I said i know what you mean but...
This is usual in fantasy and sci-fi lore...there's always a loose end, or some conflicting information...it really doesn't matter...the GW official position is that Space Marines are male only...now if someone, somewhere, sometime, wrote something different, who cares...GW has a different opinion, and I'm sure that those female Space Marines will not sue anyone for their right to exist...seriously...it's sci-fi lore...things can be "un-written", it's not real history...
It is outdated and has been retconned long ago by tons of official sources. This isn't an issue. Space Marines are all male. Done.
I kind of wish there were. The industry needs things to allow women to play women if they so choose. or men to play women. Or whatever. It's all good man.
do you even search function bro ? Seriously there are 9,000 threads on this don't make more because now it's well you get it....
I'm all for equality don't get me wrong but some things in life (or in this case our little favorite fictional world) are just the way they are. You can try and flap your arm all you want but you won't fly and you don't see men cry because they can't get pregnant. Same thing over there in the 41st Millennium (although it's fiction and can be altered by the creators) that some things are the way they are.
The Emperor created Space Marines in his own image. That means giving them a male body. This information has been set in stone for over two decades. If you want to play as female characters more often, then perhaps Warhammer 40k isn't for you. It is known for being quite a masculine franchise. It doesn't matter what the public opinion is on this, years long canon cannot be betrayed, that would be disloyal to the license and defeat the point of it being a Warhammer 40k game. Squats were a thing once. Does that mean they were canon all along? Unfortunately not, sometimes things like this are retconned, especially the outdated information you have provided. Warhammer 40k is quite an old game now, and things get changed often. If there are going to be female characters it will come with Sisters of Battle, Eldar, or possibly Imperial Guard. Not Space Marines, and that's not going to change. Remember the source material. This is Warhammer 40k, and "In the grim dark future, there is only war". And war isn't fair. Should there be female Tyranids, or Orks? How about Necrons? They don't seem to have a gender. This is like me joining Hello Kitty Online and asking where all the male characters are.
