PS2 didn't run very well on launch because most peoples systems couldn't handle it. The setting of the new record by PS2 of almost 1200 players in one battle that was unplayabley laggy, was due to the fact that those taking part in it (myself included) were from all over the world. Effectively testing out a kind of "Mega Server". This is why I was so skeptical that Eternal Crusade could do it with far more players. And only hours after saying this I was proven correct. I've been playing PS2 since Closed Beta and I'm still amazed to this day that it can handle the massive battles that it does. It's truly a revolutionary game well ahead of it's time. That's why it hasn't had any competition at all in almost 3 years. Which is why I find it funny when people moan about PS2 with the miracles it pulls off. I can play on the NA Server from New Zealand with a very playable ping of 200-250, on a continent of 1200 players. These individual servers have up to 2000 players playing concurrently on the one server on separate continents. It truly is amazing. Many of us thought that Eternal Crusade might actually give us a legitimate alternative to PS2. But this looks very unlikely in the immediate future, with the new realistic update to the FAQ that the "Open World" continent is going to be divided into small Zones.
Totalbiscuit reported PS2 couldn't reach 60 FPS in his machine, and he had a GTX 770. If your game can't reach 60 FPS on a high end card, you have no excuse. Also, blaming player machines is not a good excuse to begin with either. Yes, if it is meant to something, it proves that an actual, playable "Mega server" is still impossible with our current technology. Pikko was claimed to be able to solve this, now we know that it's just good on paper, not in real environment. Maybe, maybe not. Only time will tell. However, like I said, as long as bE knows how to build a good foundation, then they can make a hell of a game out of it
On the topic of rewarding defenders there will be a loot crate reward for successfully capturing and defending bases. 13. What are the current thoughts on resources/items we will collect during game play? Weapons? credits? BRENT ELLISON: Reward Boxes offer Weapon Bases, Weapon Mods, Consumables (grenades & packs), and Visual Customization components like different Armour Marks. We’re considering putting Vehicle Loadouts in there as well. In addition, we’re considering a “token” system for buying from vendors. As opposed to RP, which is earned passively for the use of spawning things in the field, tokens would be earned through PvP, PvE and/or reward boxes and then traded in for either specific bases/mods or categorized reward boxes. If you “sell” any of your earned items, they’ll convert to tokens. This is still under development, but we want to offer you some way to get the standard weapon base or consumable you want without having to rely on RNG, and we don’t want you to hoard the resources intended for helping your faction so a system similar to this is necessary in some fashion. - community Q&A Answers Compilation Thread page 2 post #15. I figure once earned reward boxes go into a personal "inventory" or "stash" to be opened later whenever you want. Also defending would easily tie into campaign objectives that direct players to do so or at least keep it in the player's mind so they can respond to a sudden attack on important locations.
I enjoyed it, Nathan cleared stuff up and eased my mind and the Art to 3D models were fantastic. Give me my Bolter already
I personally cannot take that " the server cant handle it" bunk when it comes to large battles. As I was there during the Muchdifferent Man vs Machine technical test that broke the world record. It worked. it was an absolute Cluster*** but it worked. So in that sense it may just be an issue of software not interfacing each other since individually everything seems solid. Aka you'll figure it out, and it will be beautiful lol. However its just unacceptable that there is NO new gameplay/screenshots this long. Yes Miguel did a great job, and it was sad to see him go, but He shouldn't be the only one that placed effort in getting people excited for the game. I would like a bit more stimuli than watching 4 people talking in front of a laptop.
lol definitely not! I never believed that. That's why I was so damn skeptical in my post in regards to when Nathan mentioned it in the previous Twitch stream, and rightfully so it turned out.
nathan was joking about these number aren't real example, like when he talked about buy ammo with real money.
Yeah, I was waiting for him to actually give us a serious answer to our very important question, after saying such a ridiculous statement, but he never did. So I had to assume that he was A) being serious, or B) just being another 1 of the long list of game developers who say whatever us gamers want to hear so that we buy their game, or C) a game developer that doesn't believe in answering very important questions about their game seriously. I'm still not sure if it's B or C....
Was checking the forum after the latest stream (10). Personally I think it was a good stream. It answered some questions in a meaningull way. I still see people on the forum with "last nail on the coffin for big open world"- opinion. No. I think it is still way too early to get so pessimistic about it, because hope for open world is still there, but then again. If they'll make a lot of big instances that armies must get through to get to the adjusted instance/s as well as make a lot of room for tactical/strategical variety on how to approach objectives, I'd argue that with good level and world-map design it might be even better then huge open world, promised from the beginning. Thanks to the way they approach the problem, I think it would be possible with time to make the world map much much bigger then just some PlanetSide 2 map. It'll be easier to add new factions/expansions when need arises. Devs are taking a much safer approach, making it more possible for the game to succeed, instead of just going straight for a totally new, revolutionary dream-like project. Besides... what if they were just to make that planetside 2 copy with WH40k skin over it?.. Would it really be a good approach? Isn't there already one PlanetSide 2 game out there? Is it really needed?
