Obviously we need them in this game. What do the fans want to see implemented? What are the devs aiming to deliver? What's a realistic expectation of the art style of the explosion, the sound, and the "impact" it will have at ground 0, 10m 100m, away, and on gameplay itself?

Are we also going to see a lot of grenade spam with front lines squaring off with 350+(++++) players each?

so shiny... call of juarez and battlefield one looks the best for me, crysis isnt also bad either
  3. On a serious note, with this many players, if a 100+ explosions go off at the same time it can be very taxing on the hardware and generate a lot of lag, for instance look at the FX effects in Guild Wars 2 for example. How can a balance be struck between "looks awesome" and "crash worthy intensity".

A lot of games now use particle effects for explosions, but particles are rather hardware intensive and a lot of particles is something that scares me to the point where I don't want to think about, images of burning PCI-E connectors and melting silicon comes to mind...

One solution would be to do it "old school" and render explosions as multidimensional sprites (4 or 5 sprites stacked onto each other in a star formation so it appears to be 3D from any angle). But of course doing this can look strange in a game which has otherwise realism graphics. Thing is, they are only truly tell-able if you pause the game then move the camera around.

Another would be a combination of sprites and particle effects.

In the film "battle los Angeles" or whatever it was called. .. the explosio sounded nice... just something I remembered...
Have a listen sound guys :)

I'd pitch this inspiration if the explosion montage wasn't mashed up with the worst dubstep known to man...

I particularly like the effects from 13:20 0nwards when applied to Chaos, Eldar, and Warp driven explosions...
  7. The warp in the Dawn of War titles was projected as white/red/pink/purple cyclones. Same in Space Marine. Personally and I think in the lore as well... warp based explosions and warp rifts appear in multi-spectrum of eye hurting bright colours on the upper scale that then peak to pure white. And it only appears this way because the human eye struggles to understand what it is picking up.

Space Marine also added translucent/transparent dimensional ripples (like invisibility in the Halo and Crysis games, man invisibly looks so cool in those games, a very undervalued effect in most games, it's really hard to do). Anyway, Chaos is a Dimension which doesn't naturally occur in reality, when a dimensional rift occurs, based on popular scientific theory and pretty much science fiction of a universe not bound to the physical laws of our universe interacts, the *impact shock wave* caused by the intersection causes visible translucent ripples in the fabric of reality.

While Chaos itself is of a stuff which is incomprehensible to reality, it is raw thought and emotion trying to exist in a material plane. As a result our eyes can only perceive it in the form of energy and energy in the material universe generates radiation, in this case light and the spectrum constantly shifts as the energy is twisting and changing form.

(plan to add some examples to this at a later time, having a hard time finding them anywhere)
