This coming from a person who has some experience in the game development industry, of course.

Roleplaying would make this game even more addicting than what it already sounds like. Especially with a rank system within strike forces, and then squads.

Guys there's no need to get personal on this, we're just discussing and sharing thoughts !!
(as long as the discussion goes forward and we dont just repeat our same point over and over, right Torn ? ;))

Well, I think that what you're missing is that this game is a MMOwhatever, but still a MMO !
Which means that it's not a single-player console game, which means that there is one thing that is really important if this game wants to be successfull : longevity !!
I'm all for games like Space Marines and whatnot, where you play for X hours, have a lot of fun and then jump to the next game, but a MMO is a different thing, it has to keep players attracted for a long long time, like, many years !
Do you really think that if the only thing to do in this game is PvP, PvP, and more PvP, people will stay that long ?
I have a few exemples that come to mind when I think of MMOs that completely missed the point of being actual MMOs and shut down so quickly that we barely had time to play them (Auto Assault anyone ?)
Eternal Crusade looks like a very promising game, and I would hate to see it close its server just a few months after launch...
You seem very enthusiastic about this game, so if you wanna be able to play it for a long time and enjoy the part you like about it (what was it again ?? ah yes, PvP :D ) , maybe you should consider that it has to be attractive to a lot of different players who will need a lot of different ways to play it ?

Woah Woah Guys, one weekend off and no 19 pages. Jesus. It's nice to see you all are passionate in this, maybe a little to bit some times. PVP and PVE can perfectly fine at the same time. See EVE Online. You can do PVE but you always have to concern abut pvp. Players can kill you everytime as long as you are in space. We dont need special seperated spots where pvp is not allowed. But think about Planets that are safe. Not on every world is an open conflict against other factions. Soem planets didn't see an enemy for hundreds of years, so "safe planets" are not against lore or something, they are part of the universe. And as i enjoy the debate about PVP and PVE, please do it in another thread. So where do i want to do RP. Mostly everywhere i can and i would love to do it on an cruiser or on the planet and in war. And try to win a battle is part of RP for me, too. We will see what come. I thank you all for taking part in this discussion and hope for more. Kind regards Tellos

I will roleplay, and I'm a firm believer that most people will roleplay aswell in the end. The thing with the Warhammer 40k-universe is that it's so developed, fun and engrossing it will come naturally. Maybe not all the time and without the background stories on about 20 A4s, but at least more developed than how it is with most WoW-players where all you hear is the occasional "FOR THE HORDE!!!" being shouted.

I just hope that people from the different sides will be able to understand each other.

the game will repeat the fate of MechWarrior Online
pony chapters, Hurr Durr Marines, Retardo Legion and such will be endemic.
  8. I myself think roleplaying is a must in this game if you truly want the world to come to life and really believe in this vibrant universe. I know the developers of Eternal Crusade have emphasised massively on the role playing aspect really giving incentive to players to really fill the boots of there characters and to see through there eyes.

In the interviews they talk about roleplaying and the world with so much passion talking of how they want players to feel real emotions like fear, joy, happiness, heroism, hope, hopelessness, victory, defeat...
To when your on the battlefield getting hurt you truly see your character going through pain, and seeing his last few breaths with both comrades and enemies alike around him...

I am truly looking forward to this aspect and it is one I praise the developers a thousand times over for the passion for this style of immersive experience, just look at the interviews that Miguel Caron one of the lead developers talks like in his interviews it is truly inspiring to see a man with passion !!!

  9. I think EVE is actually a very apt comparison, myself. PvP is a HUGE part of EVE...but there is also PvE stuff....and RP. Quite a lot of RP, from what I can see.

People keep saying "But this is a PVP game!" So? Heaven forbid the devs put enough effort in to cater to people who want a DECENT 40k game where they can also RP. The two are not mutually exclusive, and hopefully (given the Dev team has shown a real flair and passion so far) they will accommodate people like myself who have lost their main MMORPG home (RIP City of Heroes...) and seriously want another.

I seriously do not see how asking for RP tools (walk, chat bubbles, emotes etc) in areas like a Strike Cruiser or Battle Barge are a) Unreasonable or b) game breaking. If anything, they add an extra, OPTIONAL layer of immersion to the game. You don't like that sort of RP? Fine! No one is twisting your arm saying you have to. But, on the flip side of that, stop saying that people can't and shouldn't have that sort of thing, and act like they are being unreasonable asking for such things. The MMO industry as a whole right now is bloody LOUSY with adding sufficient RP tools and I, for one, am sick to the back teeth of it.

  10. I concur, though those mechanics are already there for Roleplayers and rightly should be.

You may have misunderstood some of the points I made earlier in the thread so I'll try to explain (Also an Eve player so i see where you're coming from).

I want RP and PvP to go hand in hand, what I specifically do not want is safe zones for PvE or Roleplay which break the flow of the PvP Gameplay (That is territory that for some reason you can't PvP in by an artificial mechanic. Doing it in space is absolutely fine as it doesn't break game flow but adding PvE only zones in amongst the PvP areas just ruins the feel of it for a lot of people.
