Here's a tl;dr then: If you are thinking your problem is just A in an asymmetrical balance, it may not be A, but instead a factor of B and C. Or even Z.
The factions in planetside 2 are an OK comparison, aside from minor visual and thematic elements they differ mainly in weaponry. You have fast and lots of bullets for little damage, slow and few shots for massive damage, and middling of both except lasers. We have similiar differences and similiarities except the fast race does good damage(eldar), the slow race does bad damage or the wrong type(orks), and both middling races(marines) are not fair and balanced even between themselves.
I was there for this. Fortunately the devs have so far avoided this in its development. They don't necessarily listen to the player base on what should be nerfed, and what should be buffed. This is both good and bad, but that happens.
An issue I have with the original post it that it essentially tells the devs to 'git gud', which isn't that useful feedback. Balancing ofc requires a top down perspective, like if weapon X is op, nerfing that weapon might give larger balance issues further on and you should always try to keep the big picture in mind. But all this is obviously things that the devs are aware of , and it's also something that is much easier to do with hindsight compared to doing it before hand. Of course getting things right the first time is best, but that is hardly realistic. What is realistic is to use an iterative approach, fix item/mechanic X, nerf or buff it a bit and see how it ends up. And yes, this can lead to unexpected results. For example, I played a lot of MWO and in it one mech, the Victor was king of the hill for a while. So what did the devs do? They figured it was due to the way jump jets worked on especially really big mechs. So they nerfed that. Then they nerfed one of the main weapons it used. Then they gave all weak mechs mini-buffs to be more viable, and the devs ofc knew the Victor was a strong mech (it used to be at least). And so on. In the end the mech that was king of hill ended up being one of the weakest mechs in the game, due to iterative balancing of mainly large scale mechanisms. Sometimes your favourite part of a game goes from op to up. That's just part of games.
I got terrifying flashbacks of "the hills are alive with the sound of Magriders" when a Wave Serpent was cruising over the roofs on Maggon, unstoppable until I dedicated my game to killing him each time.
A few hours ago i posted a photo of an amazing formation of 4 predators, with 4 devastators, 2 on each side i buildings' balconys and 2 JPAs guarding the rearside, then a guy came and said ONE Wave Serpent with some Fire Dragons inside could easily beat such formation, i disagree with him but i just can't understand how can someone believe this and at the same time say that the factions are balanced, it really boggles my mind.
