Esports - The Future Of Mmos?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by sanlumiere, Apr 16, 2014.

  1. Because I'm competitive? Competitiveness isn't killing games... it's losers who play like losers and expect to win that kill games with poor attitudes and expectations. Play to win or go home... don't expect to win without dedication... you can slew away with any garbage you want from your mouth.. doesn't make ME the cancer... just makes you an idiot.
  2. This argument is testament to why E-sports shouldn't be introduced into MMOs. It attracts the immature infantile demeanor associated with people who are by their very nature too immature to understand that the way they behave is abusive, argumentative and aggressive.

I've met high ranking players in games like LoL and the like, they fall into two camps. Those who play to make money and those who play because they enjoy it. Not once have they needed to prove they are better than another player, they simply are; They don't abuse other players or call people losers either.

It's the immature people think they got something to prove to others, who are more often than not the little fanbois of successful people in life, they who follow them around trying to emulate them and want to promote E-sports. That's the people who think they are good with complete chauvinistic arrogance, the arrogant infantile immature players who are attracted by E-sports and ruin games. And are themselves often too arrogant and egotistical to look at themselves and see that they themselves are the problem, they are the ones causing drama and their bad sportsmanship as well as general disrespect and belittling of any player they think isn't as good as they are is the exact problem in itself.

The best solution to deal with this; cut off the cause of the problem, then no one will have a reason to argue. It should be a resounding No; if you don't like it, you should go find another game to play and another community to be a part of. Because bickering with people who clearly disagree with you will not earn you any respect or admiration. All it does is cause decent amount an otherwise stable community. E-sports is a source of drama, something MMO gamers are in general allergic to; We have suffered enough from drama over the years and we don't want any more of it, especially from argumentative people.

If I ever encounter anyone in multiplayer who think they are better than me in any game. I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on them.

Here is a history lesson for you in the manner of conceit; There was once a corp in EVE Online called Band Of Brothers, they took the game very seriously; They treated other corps very poorly, they didn't play for fun, they played to be the best; They went so far as to cheat. Then one day the goons from SomethingAweful came along and well... you know the rest. There is a difference between skill and thinking you are better than everyone else. Arrogance is as much an enemy as any.

  3. They could go with an honor duel format for esports. It wouldnt reflect the size and scope of this game but esports doesnt necessarily need that. 1vs 1, most skilled player wins.

That reminds me very closely of a situation with my paintball team when it split up cos one part of it wanted to 'go proffesional' - they ended up like you said. And the second part- 'non proffesional' plays until today and has good relations among each other.
  5. Well exactly!

For a long time "honor duels" in MMOs were considered the height of competitive play. And what it won you was the respect of your peers and any player in proximity to the duel. Arena kind of killed that too in WoW, I remember the popular spots for honor duels in WoW, outside the gates of Ironforge (where everyone who was level 60 hanged out, because it was the place to be for raiding and PvP guilds). That was before BC btw...

  6. It's because of the attitude of 'Im competitive and therefor a better human being in every way that you could ever be.' And it's the idea that playing to win is the only way to have fun, and if you dont devote at least 12 hours a day to perfecting a game mechanic then you are beneath notice and are scum.

Competition is fun, being an overriding, e-peen stroking douche bag is not.

This. So much this. I saw the fall of firefall too and it was incredibly saddening because the game had huge potential.
Development purely for esports is a terrible idea for a game that wants to be about war.
If it's limited to arenas it has some potential. But we already have the split of pve + open world combat . If we split the community more it's likely that one of those zones of splitting will end up being not as popular and with less people being there devs will avoid adding new content for it.
  8. You obviously read way inbetween the lines brother. I'm not saying being a more skilled gamer makes you a better person or even a better gamer. Being a better gamer is something that is a perspective driven argument. Since we have varying communities of different interests, the definition of "better" gamer is an elusive argument. My gaming skills do not make me a better gamer.. they only enhance MY interest in how I want to play. Like minded people congregate. So, in the past years some choice like minded people who value the improvement of skills have congregated, not to wave epeens, but to set an objective to dominate the competitive aspect of the games we play with a more "Mature" mindset. There's no bragging, no trolling, we win and let our play speak for itself.. we continually evaluate our performance... test each other, continually improve in a professional manner. Winning is an objective... performing at my optimum is where I derive enjoyment. I hope that clears that up. Having fun with your friends and wrecking the opposition is also a source of enjoyment... I think we can agree on that.
  9. I was not talking about you. Was talking about the people who actually do act like douche bags. Or even worse the 'hard core' gamers that think that their opinions should have more weight with the devs and development. Truly horrible displays of playground immaturity. But you dont seem to act like that so it's good.

  10. And in the real world, those people could be curbed if they don't watch out.
