oh great, a single game bothers to show Eldar warriors and from that point on all Eldar fans are stuck with "pew pew pew" as our iconic weapon sound...its strange but I'm actually starting to really dislike the makers of DoW and whoever at GW signed off on it, and I've never even played the damn game series lol
Look I really don't want to get into an argument, especially as my intention was to help you out. Nevertheless some of what you said could only really be taken in the wrong way and I felt it could use some clarification to prevent misunderstanding. For instance if you say about shuriken catapults that "it's a magnetic railgun", rather than "it's a bit like a magnetic railgun but using gravity not electro-magnetism", then that is a source of misunderstanding. And no, you didn't mention shrieker cannons, I did. I did this to back up what you were saying about their being 'monomolecular edged' by illustrating that with an example. As I said several sources claim that they are disks one molecule in thickness, or just 'monomolecular'. This is either wrong or ambiguous and likely to confuse people, since as you said "monomolecular means "single molecule". When you read the description of shrieker ammo it becomes clear that although they have edges one molecule thick they aren't one molecule thick all the way through*. * Of course there is always the possibility that the shrieker ammunition is actually a single molecule that is ridiculously big, but this seems pretty unlikely.
You what!? Go play them now! They are the best 40k games currently available. DoW1 and its first 2 expansion packs are larger scale and have a base building. It features most of the factions available in 40k, Necrons, IG, SM, CSM, Tau, Eldar and Orks. It is (obviously) the older game and as such, shows its age much more than its successor, but it still looks reasonable and is still a lot of fun. Soulstorm (DoW1's 3rd expansion) wasn't done by Relic (who did the rest of the DoW games) and it shows. The 2 reasons to pick it up are to 1; get access to the Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar, 2; Be able to play the Ultimate Apocalypse mod which expands the rosters of all factions, adds the Tyranids and increases the games scale to include titans. DoW2 and its expansions have the much tighter focused campaigns and is more about squad micro-management. It has a much more limited faction roster only having; SM, CSM,Eldar, IG, Orks and Tyranids. The Elite mod for DoW2 Retribution provides a a roster expansion and better multi-player balance.
no thanks, I've never enjoyed that type of game (RTS) so a 40K themed one isnt going to change that, and I tried real hard to enjoy the LOTR ones, I'd of been all over DMO if it had made it to shelves since I actually enjoy the MMO themepark games, at least they are good for a year or so if I enjoy the IP before they get stale, and I'll enjoy EC when its launched, I've enjoyed PvP FPS/TPS on occasion and EC will fit that niche nicely
By the way, I'm totally not a fan of RTS, though I enjoy those based on the Universes that I like - Dune2 and a couple others (Dune), MechCommander 1,2 (Battletech) and Dawn of War 1,2 (40K). It's more a matter of devotion and interest to the setting, than to particular genre. The only stand-alone RTS that I love was called "Z". And Dawn of War (both) is truly remarkable title, it catches the spirit of 40K pretty good. Also, it's quite fair to all the races, features simple but interesting mechanics, and is very rich visually, even the 1rst DoW features much more unit animation than much more recent and widely successful StarCraft2! Each unit has several finishing moves and it's a real pleasure to watch how they behave and how they fight. And you will not have to try very hard, DoW was always easy) It's a game to check out for a fan of 40K)
nah like I said, not my cup of tea lol I tried warcraft and hated it soon after, then I played the LOTR ones off and on..still have one installed on my comp...but again it never really grabbed me and I'm a huge LOTR fanboy, its the simple mechanics of build/spawn/position/engage and every version of RTS's I've played all turn out an obvious solution...usually a cheap unit or unit combination that you mass spawn and zerg around the map, something thats useful but cheap to spawn replacements for...and that dictates the order of the building you make, the upgrades you obtain and your strategy, if you love the game you play around for 6 mnths or so trying different combinations and strategies but it always seems to boil down to the same answers
*Dislikes rts because of 'simple mechanics' and 'obvious solutions' *Loves themepark mmo m8... Also try DoW2 if you feel like giving those types of games a chance. It breaks the mould in a lot of ways.
I don't even like RTS and I enjoyed DoW. The story and lore is poor, but the voice acting and gameplay is great. Multiplayer is where DoW2 shines.
I don't RTS much due to the fact I hate throw away units tossing thousands into the grinder... No army would do it like that unless they were desperate and to me that's not fun.
actually I said I enjoyed themepark MMO's, just like I said I enjoyed PvP FPS/TPS on occasion..never said I loved either of them EDIT besides its the "play a whole team" mechanic as opposed to "play a character" which is my hurdle to enjoyment, I hate micromanaging in games and IRL, thats the big reason I do what I do for a living and have actively refused attempts to push me into management
