Wasnt about EC at all, it was about the future of MMOs and some aspects. Steven was just at the desk with many other peeps answering questions. Though he did reference EC a few times, nothing was said that we didnt know already though.
I didn't really learn anything new from PAX, though the reveal for the next MTG expansion was interesting I must admit. But it is always nice to see the overall attitudes everyone has each year and how they change. Well Steven is very much a part of the crowd who believe in unique game play styles for each individual class rather than "You're a hero, you can do everything!" mentality which has violated the fabric of massive multiplayer games in the recent years. If you remove your dependence on other players, it encourages alienation in PvE content and discourages co-operation in PvP content, however having full dependence on each other has the effect of making healing or tanking feel like the suck, so you need a balance, but not to go to an extreme of either. Luckily EC seems to me to be a game of the same ilk as PS2, DAoC, TF2 and EVE Online as well as other PvP concentric games. Where classes are more playstyle roles than of actual distinctively set "DPS,TANK.HEALER" if anything variety in design still survives in games like that. You wouldn't believe me if I said it, but it's a fact... there is more clear diversity in Planetside 2 class system than there is in the class system of WoW, which has over the years devolved into exactly, tank/healer/dps. If you want a general idea of unique classes filling multi-roles without a set job, play Team Fortress 2.
I partook in all the given examples, and i prefer the defined roles. Like i said not the thread for this debate.
