Not training in a Massive PvP game... This is folly. I was in the biggest NC PS2 outfit, and they train, and train hard. When you are that big (1K+members, closer to 2K when I left) you need coordination, basic training with your squad, comm training, etc everybody has to be on the same page. Now a lot of the training took place while playing (who want to play a game to sit through a lecture) but it was on the leadership to ensure the new people were brought up to speed. Throwing people into a meat grinder and expecting them to 'just get it' imo, is the worst thing to do. I agree with the training areas, I believe that is vital, and I support the E-sport idea as long as it does nto negatively effect the core game.
To be entirely honest, I fear that E-Sports are a two-edged sword with an extremely sharp blade. On the one hand, it may increase the popularity of the game, but on the other, I believe it also takes away a certain "just-for-fun" aspect of the game. Take a look at games like SC2 and all the Dota Clones. They have literally the worst communities of any given games, plainly because you don't play these games to have fun, but to win. And god help these poor fecking noobs on your team if you don't.
The one of the things they did right with ps2 is the VR training room. While you're there it let's you try everything before you buy it, i think having something like that in EC is not a bad idea.
I think some form of e-sport within the game would be awesome and could only benefit the game, Maybe even what ps2 does, The faction battles.
I'd like to see some sort of arena mode but unless it really was a top quality esports experience I'd rather the game stay away from it completely. It really doesn't look good that games such as Guild Wars 2, Planetside 2 and Natural Selection 2 just to name a few are making a mediocre attempt to delve into esports when it really won't work.
My point wasn't to make it an e-sport. This was a discussion that was taking place on the beta forums, and I wanted to bring it here. People were interested in more arena style combat as well the massive battles. Something to do in their off time. Not everyone wants to be at the front lines, people will idle at their ships, do the pve content, and then what? Small little challenge game modes on your ship, or small arena duels - this would be pretty cool, no? If they implement the five v five (just a number, could be more, could be less) arena mode - why not add a good camera angle behind it to allow for some e-sport like commentary? In game this could be accomplished through servo-skull stations, allow the onlookers to view the match through these servo skulls (they float so it would be like a floating camera) I came up with the idea of the PvPvE gauntlet as just something to add variety. I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel, but add onto it. You needn't be so critical and hostile, I was only seeking to improve the game with suggestions, sir.
LoL, SC2 and DOTA2 didn't come about naturally as an e-Sport. The developers/publishers spent a lot of money on making them e-Sports.
Once I heard that to build a game with potential for e-sport you need to not focus on being a e-sport And that actually makes sense, make a fun game with potential for skill level differences and high skill ceilings and there you have the potential for a e-sport Starcraft, Dota neither lol was built from ground up to be a e-sport they just gave the tools for it and expanded upon it when they could
I really like what you are saying here, not only the PvPvE, but your last sentence. While I am very happy to dismember any of you in new and horrifyingly bloody ways, in game, I feel that we should strive to build a community that can amicably agree to disagree, or discuss points and counter points with a modicum of civility and mutual respect. There are far too many communities out there where the members, (not mod's, or site owners) lets too much go. I would love to see this community police itself, and right now is the time to strike, the forum is about 48 hours old at this point and I am asking all of us to call BS on flaming, trolling, and any of the other counter-productive BS that takes place on game forums. Sorry to topic hijack here, but I feel this is important and we can and SHOULD police ourselves and let the Mod's mete out administrative (not like Starship Troopers...although...) punishments, not hunt down rabble. Anway, imo.
I was not trying to be hostile and i apologize if i came off that way. But Many game seem to try and push really hard for a e-sports scene and then proceed to go nowhere, case in point Natural Selection 2 and Ps2. I am not against more content and more stuff overall i just don't think they need to make a spectator sports out of it. They can do E-Sports down the line after release i just don't want them to make it a high priority. Well dota 2 and sc2 where a bad example and yes they spent ungodly amounts of money on the e-sports. But SC1 and DOTA1 where not made with 'e-sports in mind' when they released, that came after both games gained popularity. People started casting game, hosting tournaments, etc and it just took off from their. But when the sequel where released having an e-sports scene was a no brainier. Couldn't haven't said it better myself this is the point i am trying to make a good e-sports game needs to be a fun game first and a e-sports second.
