Don't Make This Game Easy For "noobs"

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by IronBerserker, Feb 16, 2014.

  1. Couldn't think of any other board to put this in so i put in GD.

One of my biggest worries in a game industry dominated by shooters is that countless shooters recently have been making their games easier for the younger, noob-like players. I hope to god that Eternal Crusade is not one of those games. For example, Halo used to have a pretty wide skill gap between veterans and noobs; veterans knew where all the power weapons were, where the best grenade spots were, and had considerably better aim than the younger players. That is changing with Halo 4, several gametypes have been abandoned that are considered too hard, maps have become bigger and wider to compensate for power weapons, and special abilities have been added to make it easier for new guys to get kills more often. Halo is just one example of devs 'dumbing it down' for new players, but i wont list the rest since my point has been made.

My one hope is that the Eternal Crusade devs dont dumb anything down through EC's lifespan, i know that many people on the forums here not only delve deep into WH40K's lore, but also value challenging gameplay and hard-earned skill. I want to EC to feel hard and challenging, i dont want it to be a smooth-sailing weenie-hut-jr's hold-your-hand trip, i want it to be a brutal, fast-paced, visceral, strategic grind for supremacy, with each victory paid in blood and men's lives.

Dude you do understand how much of an elitist little child you sound like right now. Don't use the word noob on this forum unless your prepared to take some flak. I get what you saying though you don't want the devs making the game too easy for new players I get it. Thing is though if you make the new guy get curb stomped every time he enters combat without so much as even hitting the guy a lot of people will stop playing. I by no means support the recent dumbing downs. The dumbing downs devs are doing is to try and give the new guy a chance. A lot of games implement this in a way hardcore fans disapprove of and hate. And if you checked up you might find that the devs say this is going to be a skill based meaning vets will have a good advantage but the new guy still has a chance so I suggest you calm down friend.

Saying that you want this game to be "noob free" and "no little kids" and then listing Halo as your example of proper implementation is not winning you a lot of points on the reasoned-argument scale.
  5. Thats not the point, the point is to not dumb the game down as many existing games have already done, all i want is for the game to be challenging, thats it.

Agree with OP, but I also understand that a large proportion of 40k's fanbase are older individuals who tend to struggle with twitch games.

Understandable argument, bad implementation of said argument.

The higher up on the scale of lvl up, however it may present it self, should be harder, a new player should have it easy.

Make the entrance barrier easy, make the high lvl play through harder, that said.

Make it dumb and easy as well as fun at the beginning, as the person adjust and gains experience playing the game, one will crave to advance forward little by little in skills, adjusting this to weapons which are harder to use later on as you lvl, but cool and nice damaging weapons, will leave you with more enjoyment, and more skill to implement your own playstyle.

At highest of lvl up weapons/armour, one will get familiar with the new concept of gear, more risk, harder to use, yet more rewarding once you pull it off.

What exactly do you mean by "challenging"? Do you want fewer indicators, in your HUD? That'll decrease the amount of tactical flexibility available to your commanders, and will make it impossible to coordinate unaffiliated players, increasing the number of zergs that form. Do you want extremely short kill times to increase risk? Than you'll get hundreds of KDR goblins running around with shotguns and smgs like we've got in PS2 - skilled players who just also happen to be shortsighted and self interested. Maybe you want devastating penalties for death or damage, that result in extensive legwork and long waiting times to get back in the fight? Do these changes sound fun?

The solution to new players isn't to drive them away, it's to coordinate them so they're useful, and can learn to be better. "Dumbing down" and "challenge" are overused, meaningless words that are not realized with some magical switch that removes all the 12 year olds and unaffiliated players from your game. Maybe you could state some specifics for improvement? Or maybe all you need is a mute button to get that one 9 year old out of your comms?

Being young and being a noob are to things which do not necessarily correlate, age doesn't always bring wisdom.

The game can't be too hard that it puts most players off, because then it fails as an MMO, but yes it needs to be challenging. But as long as the weapons, skill and upgrades are balanced I don't see how it will end up in the same hole Halo 4 is in.

  10. What he said.

I like it where you star off slow and gentle.

Then you have to fist a carnifex with a combat knife while riding a reaver titan in sphess that is attacked by orks who are powered by the warp and are controlled by khorne.

And throw a guardsman in there I guess...
