That's a very broad assumption with next to no evidence to prove it. If you're going by the crap written on Reddit or Twitch TV, they are in fact shit posting and in turn is intentional trolling to get the attention of prominent community members, the developers or broadcasters. Because they get a thrill out of the attention they get in response for it. Trust me, a lot of people who play the Dawn of War games are completely aware of the broader Warhammer 40 000 universe. As for what they think of it, I'm not going to assume anything. Unless you see legitimate cases of ignorance, such as posts on Twitter, Facebook, official forums and other social networks where being a troll has real world consequences; then such statements often hold little example as an argument for a broad categorisation of what is simply a fictional categorization of a portion or significant portion of the community. The simple fact is, people see a game which looks fun to play; They buy it, they play it; Then they move onto the next cool looking game. Which is the nature of the consumer, which is what makes up the majority of gamers in the broadest of sense if you see the market in broad strokes. In reality the majority of people who purchase and play games tend to only buy a couple of games or one game a year and play it very casually while spending the rest of their time playing casual phone games or not playing any other game. Statically Blizzard dominates the casual market on PC, while both Value and Riot Games respectively dominate the E-sports market on PC. No other studio or company can even hope to match them in broad market control, all they can ever hope for is to appeal to niche communities or look for people to market their games to whom are interested in something different. If someone isn't already interested in Warhammer 40 000 as a whole past that of the Dawn of War video game titles after playing the Dawn of War video game titles, there is a very high possibility they will never be interested. Because if they were in the first place, they would go out of their way to find out more information of their own volition, people as a mass behave stupid, but people as individuals are not stupid. Yes you may be able to hype or amaze people by blinding them with awesome by advertising the crap out of a product to the point of absurdity... but what would that accomplish? Companies often assess what is considered feasibility studies, which is the process of calculating the risk of investing in ventures to boost capital and bank for both pocket, further a business, fund employees and future proofing. In these assessments they work out "How much sales can we expect if we advertise? will we make enough money back to compensate for how much money was spent advertising?" Problem is most companies lack the balls to take the risk of making a giant investment into risky endeavours. So long as ex-lawyers and ex-fast food/ex-consumer goods businessmen are in charge of any aspect of any entertainment industry, be it film, video games, boardgames, franchises or whatever. They are always going to look for the easiest way to make money with the least risk involved because that is how they are wired. It's even worse when the company is public trading and they have to answer to investors who are always poised to raise a pitchfork if they are even a tiny bit concerned they may lose their precious free income for doing nothing. So there is that... Sometimes investors actually genuinely care about the company and the product they invest in, but that is often rare. Now apply this sort of situation to where Relic as a company currently stands, combine this with the stubborn attitudes of it's current game designers on top of SEGA's "We don't give a crap about the customer, just making a return on an investment" attitude they have held for the past 10 years. I believe it would take someone with incredible amounts of clout and character to convince their fellow developers at Relic to make another Dawn of War game and in turn convince the people in charge. Then after that they will need to convince SEGA it's worth the investment. So long as a company is full of bitter yes men, or people who say tentatively "yeah we'll like to make another dawn of war" *fidgets with fingers while mumbling dream goals* then nothing really progresses. I don't know what is going on at Relic or what the work environment is like or how good the people there are at their jobs or their attitudes. But from what I've seen of how they behave when they do show their faces on Twitch, it doesn't speak to me ground shattering personalities.
These are ridiculously ott and complex responses. Keep it up Looks like we're in the Dark Age of 40kVidya. Maybe we should make a novel series about it. Chaos Gate: The Humble Beginning Dawn of Relic: Rise of a Developer THBust: Relic and the Fall From Grace Games Workshop: The IP-Whoring Awakens
I dont know whats happening here anymore. I just wanted to say dawn of war: dark crusade was what got me interested in the warhammer 40k franchise. I would love for another dawn of war rts to be made. They seem to do a lot better for casual rts fans like me. I hate having to micro manage sqauds and units just give me a big massive army and let me slam into someone else's big massive army. When i get bored i just play a different one. I really would like to see the next rts have a fun campaign story mode AND and large scale zone all army challenge mode kinda like merging dark crusade and DOW 2 together. On top of that that arena mode from DOW2 was amazing. The only thing that ruined that one was latency issues. These games just seem way more fun than other rts out there atm. It was really refreshing to not have a starcraft like game. The whole micro manage and learning how to win in 6 minutes just ruins rts for a lot of people. My friends and I always dreamed of a massive scale random map mode. Make a ton of passive bonuses all over the map based on terrain, and have the units just have more of a general direction. More of a general guiding the troops vibe. Sure i can't tell specific infantry to target specific guys but you could give general guidlines to troops. If you get bored zoom in and watch the armies clash. Almost like a warhammer/ supreme commander mix but without the super long game times from supreme comander. I think i'm just rambling now. Soooo hope there will be a dow3. All warhammer rts are fun even with flaws.
Pretty much why I love the series. Rather than "APMCraft" where you win based on how fast you click things + meta knowledge, Dawn of War (especially Dawn of War 2) was based on making good decisions and having good positioning, mainly. There were some factions that would reward micro skills (and micro skills are always good to have anyway), but it wasn't a requirement to get a lot of enjoyment out of the games.
Loved DOW1. DOW2 was at first unfinished product specially thanks to its connection with Games for Windows. At least retribution solve this problem. But I really hate campaing in retribution even Original was Better not to mention Chaos rising. In DOW1 I played mostly skirmishes against AI not because campaings were bad but because skirmish was so good. And with mods like Firestorm over Cronus it was phenomenal. Really I hated how units were out of scale to each others in vanilla. Problem of games today is rather overlooked singleplayer. Yes singleplayer skirmish is in my opinion very important maybe even more than campaing. Dow2 skirmish was more about territory grab then even COH1 and sadly armies were even smaller to effectively guard it. But also in DOW1 there was things I hated with pure passion and specially implementation of flying units in Soulstorm. Pure Heresy.
Apologies if it's already discussed, i couldn't read 18 pages and i'm a huge fan of DoW series so i will play any DoW game no matter how much i critized. And i'm sorry but i will critize. That being said, if DoW3 multiplayer will have the same play type like DoW2, they need to change the name as "Dawn of Minor Skirmishes" .Because it is simply: engage, break, engage again, break again.... forward, backward, forward, backward 50 times in 300 metres long area like a flag game, like a tennis game or 50 rounds boxing match i don't know. I don't know what it is, but it's not battle. But i will play it like an addict nonetheless
