What? I am not claiming superiority, I am claiming there are casuals who will run their mouth without knowing what they are talking about.

Just saying that would imply that you're somehow better than them.
  3. Gruk'Lok Blakk Klaw Blakklaw Arkhona Vanguard

Well, that's not implying you're better than "them"
He just said there's going to be more DOW Casuals really.

Not that there's anything wrong in casuals of each franchise imo. Warhammer lore is a big mouthful and when you got nothing else to go off from, but a game, it can be hard to be accurate. Specially when alot of the lore isn't set in stone, with each of us interpreting it differently.
Not to derail the thread tho' :)

I'd be so happy for the DOW III though, lets hope they really are doing something behind the scenes afterall.
Man, oh man how much I've been missing a new DOW Campaign. Imagine all the new toys we'd get. Stomping the same gitz in DC/SS is still fun though. Timeless game.

Unfortunately the Relic we know and love, and the current one are no longer the same, most of the familiar staff were laid off or went before the release of Space Marine with a few others going after the release of Company Of Heroes 2. Noun, the ol' English sheepdog of a community manager has been put to sleep yet again and the Relicnews forum has suffered a similar fate and the less said about paying for blood in Dawn Of War Two, (The obvious Segan marketing shift) the better.

    DOW3 Wish List:
    • DOW2 Mechanics of:
      • Cover and Destructible Buildings
      • Heavy Weapon arcs and set up
      • Suppression
      • Commanders and their progression system that's more akin to Warcraft 3 than DOW.
      • Race Resource that allows for global abilities. (Orbital Strike, Webways, ect.)
      • A sensible "rock paper scissors" counters between classes.
      • Retreat Function, vulnerable to melee.
    • DOW Mechanics of:
      • Bigger Armies
      • IG feeling like IG
      • Base Building
      • Armies were easier to control than having 15 unique squads.
    • Cities of Death
    • The capacity to take the fight inside occupied buildings, and then fight building to building.
    What I don't want:
    • Morale - DOW1
    • Super squads based on xp - like DoW2.

  8. No, that's a problem with society and developers lack of adapting to the fact kids these days have no interest in reading anything and want instant gratification as opposed to actually learning how to do anything; Completely usually fixated on juggling what the customer demands with what they have the resources to accomplish in an increasingly more challenging industry where the best and brightest would rather work for better paying studios.

It's more a case of a lack or absence of effective communication on part of the developer to the gamer. The very fact that people such as yourself view the "pleb masses" as being a problem makes you an instigator of the problem.

Complaining about it or pointing it out does not solve anything, if you have an issue with it, argue a solution instead of complaining about it. Just makes you look pompous and people usually don't take your opinion seriously if you project yourself as highbrow, because they have sensitive self-worth issues as a result of a society which promotes narcissism as opposed to self-effacing attitudes.

    What is effective communication?

Transparency and detailed information which is easily accessible.
Effective Communication is sending out Emails, posting news and updates on the website associated with the product, advertising, press announcements at events such as PAX and E3 (only when you have something substantial to show), along with Video and Audio Blog updates for people too lazy to spend 10 minutes of their precious life reading a news article.

What is ineffective communication, having to use Google to dig up magazine and journalistic articles from 3rd party sources such as IGN and Gamespot. Or reading the crap posted on Twitter, Reddit and unofficial forums which are often laced with biased viewpoints, especially in the case of Reddit where it's usually subjectively motivated as opposed to being cleanly objective with the intent to rally people to a narrow viewpoint, often incorrect or self motivated.

The problem with Relic is that in the past two years they have shown an incredible amount of resistance to being transparent with customers when asked direct questions. Often side winding them in replying with either a personal opinion which isn't the official stance of the studio or by ignoring questions they felt would be damning to answer and hope that people don't notice. This is of course during the extremely rare times they actually do Twitch broadcasts or interact with the community which if you're lucky is once a month.

But this isn't a result of the studio being bought out by Sega, because Relic has been like this for a long time now, as Dark Knight pointed out in an earlier post. This started to happen way back just before Space Marine was released. I won't point any fingers but Relic had a massive change in staff in charge of the company over the course of 2009 to late 2010 when the majority of the original owners, founders and people in charge of the company whom were primarily themselves game developers or programmers left the company to pursue better paying jobs, one left to work for Microsoft that I am aware of.

The company went downhill after that. Personally I feel CEOs and directors hold too much power in companies and if those people are completely stupid, it's the customer and the developers who suffer for it. It's a problem with the industry which needs to be resolved to save it from itself; This is why so many people are going indie and seeking funding from kickstarter as a direct result.

A chief problem with 'dow casual masses' is that many know little about or even know of the existence of the 40/30k universe outside the respective games. In theory, a decent solution is to show them the dark and gory beauty that is the universe DoW takes place in, and they will either run away from it, or embrace it and get more enjoyment from it.

If 40k games did this in a better manner, I am certain many would see something about these games they never thought was there, but the games we have so far don't seem to do a very good job of it. Most of the games appear fixated on their one story without showing much of the universe at large.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and Soulstorm's campaigns seemed to present 40k as all these factions fighting over 1 planet or star system because fighting is cool.

Dawn of War 2 had a decent story going on for the first two iterations before reverting to the old formula in Retribution.

Space Marine was an alright story I guess, but again, it didn't really show off the universe.

So it's up to the developers of the next big 40k thing to get their stuff together and at the very least let the 'masses' know there is a great universe behind the game. Believe it or not, there are still gamers these days that will look at something and take an interest in it, they just need to know it's there.

But this is off-topic and a story for another day.

It would be interesting to see what they plane for this. RTS Command and Conquer clones are duller than dish water regardless of the background. DoW was so easy. DoW 2 was better but still pretty repetative.

Unless its something very new, i'll be giving this one a miss. Warhammer Total War will fullfill my RTS needs.
