Melee, I've found, is largely about timing, focus, and situational awareness (who's what, where they are, and what they're doing). For instance, don't leave cover to chop somebody out in the open when you know they've got buddies watching their back or there's an Assault Marine hopping around squishing folks. A roof over your head is one of the best defenses against Assaults and Raptors, because it nixes their flying Ground Pound trump card (if they catch you with that, your character will be too stunned to react in time). If you're lucky enough to dodge the Ground Pound, and/or you're a Tactical/Traitor class, tuck-and-role out of their reach like there's no tomorrow, taking short burst shots at them in between. If you're a Devastator/Havoc, click both mouse buttons at the same time for a heavy strike to get them off balance (if you happen to be toting a Heavy Bolter, you're in luck as this will allow you to actually kill them instead of simply staving off the inevitable while praying your team mates will come to your rescue). Heavy Bolters mince Assaults and are a great support for your team with their long range suppression. This is especially a boon for Chaos since Loyalist Plasma clips Mark of Nurgle Traitors. Equip the Smart Bolt Pistol to every class and swap to it when you're in a duel. Then toggle the lock-on mode by clicking the mouse wheel (default). This keeps the camera on them so you don't lose sight of them and lets you snap off a few no-miss pistol rounds whenever space opens up between you and your opponent. Use the two mouse buttons at the same time to launch an invincible(?) wind-up stun. When you notice he's staggering more and swinging less, go for the kill. Even Shield Marines have a hard time against this. One last thing: abuse the chainsword. It's cheap, fast, and doesn't seem to be any weaker than the other weapons, other than not being able to damage vehicles (you'll be staggered if you try).
