Oddly I think the lore holds up pretty well, the next edition will do all those minor fixes. Hoping maybe the new edition may coincide with some new books on Cypher or that contain a plot line with Cypher since their going all out with this out of the blue, from a minor character mentioned in passing references to a whole dataslate thats impressive! For the individual to reach repentance they would need to reach Death, for many this would cause drastic consequences Id imagine.
See I think that cypher is still loyal to the emperor, even though he's fallen. He has the sword of the lion which is the sword that belonged to the emperor, that was given to Lion El Johnson, his first son and the primarch of the Dark Angels. I believe it was the only weapon at the time powerful enough to kill him. Now we know the inquisition is corrupt as shit and I think they are keeping the emperor hooked up to the golden throne so that he physically can not die. If he does die, he basically will reincarnate and come back, because lets face it the emperor is more than just some mortal with stupid powerful psycher abilities, he has to be some kind of powerful warp being. The inquisition want's to kill Cypher because he has the only weapon that can truly kill him, the sword of the lion. The Dark Angels want to capture Cypher because he is one of the fallen and make him repent. So I think Cypher's intentions are to take the sword back to the emperor, present the sword to him and humbly ask for the forgiveness/redemption of his chapter and then use the sword to kill him allowing the Emperor to finally come back and then proceed to kick the inquisition's ass. I could be wrong but that's my theory on Cypher at this time.
*Spoiler Alert* The HH novels go into great detail about how the Emperor will eventually be resurrected if his mortal body is killed. But time and again in the 40k as well as Fantasy universe its pretty obvious what happens if he is killed by the wrong party. If he's killed by Chaos -then they win, his soul is forfeit to the dark powers. If he is killed by a true follower of his power, or a neutral party then he will be reborn as the emperor. Its pretty obvious, on the same account, that when half of the Dark Angel legion returned home the Alpha Legion had already attacked a thousand times before against the home defense army. When the rest of the DA arrived they were immediately attacked because the HD felt it was just another Alpha trick. The Lion, not known for his forgiveness -and emotional reactions, totally fought back thinking the planet was taken over by the Heresy. The planet got destroyed, survivors on both sides went there separate ways with bitter resentment on both. The Lion probably came to his senses, or someone along the line, and realized what horrible mistake they made. The HD did no major wrong -they simply overreacted, the Lion overreacted more. The Lion side was like 'oh we gotta cover this up entirely so we don't look like the traitors." And so they have been. So look at Cypher, the one dude who was part of the home defense army obviously. Abaddon always points out that Cypher is his scout. He goes and tells Aba what choice targets to lay waste to. When Aba gets there the place is double defended and yet Cypher is so good at his job Aba can't kill him without proof of deceit and he never finds it. But why does Cypher work with Abaddon? Because its simple... He wants to coat tail him until he gets to Terra -to which Cypher will kill the Emperor before Abaddon can sacrifice him to the Chaos Powers. The end.
You have to remember the fact that the Dark Angles had an internal conflict has been hidden from almost everyone other than the dark angles themselves, so as far as most are concerned he appears to be a DA knowing nothing of the duel character of the chapter. While we all know he is part of the fallen that fact and that he maybe one of the fallen who believes the the Lion was corrupted by chaos prior to the destruction of Caliban may make him seem to be a highly convicted follower of the emperor even turning against his entire chapter, would make easy ally to the SoB
