From this thread comes the following question and answer: 2. Eldar are close, can you tell us how do you guys want each class to work? BRENT: Real quick summaries that don’t go into any of the intricacies of the classes: • Dire Avengers – Tactical unit for capturing points, great at short range, terrible at long range. • Howling Banshees – Charge & suppress in order to reach melee. • Striking Scorpions – Use stealth to reach melee, go behind enemy lines, etc. • Swooping Hawks – Harassment unit, the only jump characters that can use light weapons. • Fire Dragons – Melta unit. • Dark Reapers – Long-range fire support. • Warlocks – Psychic support Some of it is old news but a few confirmed tidbits as well. DAs supposedly being terrible at long range. Banshee suppression for the mask Swooping Hawks being the only jump unit to use light weapons So now for the speculation.. Is the Dire Avenger's equivalent of the Stalker Bolter that much inferior? Greater damage falloff or poor accuracy perhaps? On the bright side the average Eldar player won't be a sniper and actually be compelled to fight closer to objectives where they should be anyway. What might the range on the Banshee scream be if it's to be used "in order to reach melee". And will that affect friendlies like a Heavy Bolter's suppression? Not that Banshees suppressing each other is a huge deal but if it turns my screen into Lite Brite I won't too happy. Still unsure how exactly stealth works for Scorpions. I just hope it's not as garbo as PS2's infiltrator considering the SS is melee. The layout of the "real" maps we'll be getting will play a large part into how potent the stealth needs to be as well. The refinery map we have now for example would be absolutely terrible for a stealth class to work with at all objective locations minus C. Wonder what the range on the Lasblaster will be for being a "light weapon". If it's too short then runs the risk of having too many Hawks fighting with each other over real estate as they try to find close enough positions to the enemy. If too long then it's a flying sniper. No mention of Fire Dragons being able to capture objectives despite it being said during a twitch show several weeks ago. Did that change or was it just forgotten while answering? Looks like Reapers will be Eldar's only answer to long range firepower if what was stated about DAs turns out to be true. If there's a concern I have about this scenario is if the Reaper will be overwhelmed when trading shots with both Devastators and Tacticals. Warlocks as psychic support. No surprises here. Just a lot of "what ifs" in regardless to their powers and how they work.
He's saying the stormboyz will be melee characters as well. This means the only jump class that will carry a rifle type primary weapon is the Hawk.
I'm also curious how Eldar Melee will compare to everyone else for the current concept of Clashing, One would argue there's no Eldar equivalent in pure weight to the Power Axe.
My guess You don't want to end up clashing in melee as an Eldar Head to head, you're getting stomped. No ands, ifs, or buts about that Use that mobility and strike faster from another angle Unless you want to grease up power klaws with your bloody bitz
Problem with that is, I can't imagine us being too much more Mobile then those damn jump packs are now though, from close range anyway.
Jump packs are (supposed to be) clumsy in comparison to Eldar finesse. If i had to predict the jump packs we have now will be how Banshees behave when it comes to evasion/side stepping.
Let's see, another thing I'm leery about, Storm/Combi bolters. The DA are basically hard countered by those from what I understand if they're designed to be close range. I'm going on the understanding of the game it currently is, and am aware tweaking will be done.
Yo, I think you just dated yourself. I'm mostly just horrified by the news that Eldar will be able to roll more often. Tacticals already spend most of their time on their backs. Apparently the space elves are going to be flying around like it's Max Payne.
My main concern is stealth and melee in general. With how people form up right now in the alpha, stealthers are gonna have a hard time getting anything done if they need to strike then re-enter the shadows just as quick. People will just mow them down and continue on their merry way if that's the case. Melee currently is just mashing left mouse button until someone (including you) is dead. Makes it worse if there are classes that are steatlh AND melee. I'm kind of excited to see how they handle it, though. The description for the Eldar classes are really interesting with their mechanics. And, all of this stuff I just said might be up for change as the alpha goes on.
