Concern: Getting The Close Combat Right.

  1. this is how the melee combat should work...or at least what it should take inspiration from

DARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULS CHIVALRY MEDIEVAL WARFARE DARKSOULSDARKSOULDARKSOULSDARKSOULS MOUNT&BLADE DARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULSDARKSOULSand maybe take a few elements from space marine

Anything in particular you disagree with?
You could start off by using words.. heck, why stop there you could even arrange them into sentences :D

Don't get me wrong Hugh Laurie is a great actor, and I fully respect his ability to convey emotion, but that facial expression could just as easily convey gobsmacked awe, insolent boredom or the slack jawed drool of a full frontal lobotomy patient or a village idiot.
Cubanski and Chaplain Valerius like this.

too bad dark souls is unplayable with a mouse and keyboard, otherwise I might agree with you. I absolutely despised the 20 hours I put into dark souls trying to figure out how the hell to get it to function properly with a keyboard and mouse. now a controller on the other hand, I see no problem there. I do feel however that it should follow the rather weighty and self-aware style of chivalry, where each melee swing is a calculated risk and not something like mount and blade or war of the roses where melee combat is just mashing buttons till someone dies.

Also, I know a lot of people dislike Space Marine as a game, but nobody can deny how spot on the fluidity of the melee combat felt and reacted within the game. it should definitely be the prime candidate for what the development team should be looking at in terms of "feel and fluidity"

Just choose one you feel most comfortable with :D.

It's not my comfort I'm interested in, it's trying to glean the meaning behind your poor attempt at communication.

That picture tells me nothing... not. a. thing!

To me that reply could easily say
"God that was a long and technical post and I can't be bothered to try and understand it" ?

Or in simple terms "big post... brain hurtz."

Now from where I stand it just looks as though you are unable to muster a good argument and are instead making a poor attempt at trolling and flame baiting.
  6. actually, the thing people complain about most is the melee combat...

Partisan pretty much nailed the coffin shut with this.

I love 40k, and sometimes I even love the fans, but seriously.

The devs have already stated that for the most part, EC's combat will be far more similar to Space Marine than in Dark Souls (Which, if you aren't the select few who love Dark Souls, the gameplay isn't actually that great) or any of the other games everyone is wanting EC to be like. The only thing I imagine the Devs taking from Dark Souls is the idea of rolling out of the way of an attack and not being glued to your enemies when pressing right mouse button (like in Space Marine), giving you the ability to counter attack. Not the actual melee systems. Those are far too bogged down with meticulous button pressing to be fun and engaging on a huge battlefield with over 500+ players at any given time.

If you should take anything from the Pre-Alpha footage, it's that the game is probably not going to live up to the communities massive expectations of this game. The game looks absolutely great, and if it's just Space Marine + Planetside then that's totally fine. Just as long as they don't take from what those games "did wrong" (more specifically referring to Planetside than anything).

Space Marine's melee combat SYSTEM is fantastic, there were tons of different ways to attack in melee. However the time-to-kill was so ridiculously low that in MP it was who ever could get the first right click off usually won the "flailing around with a chainsword" combat. Not only that, but none of the shoulder charges, nor push-kicks, or any of those cool moves would do much of anything in MP. If those were to stagger or actually hinder your enemies ability to attack, then you've got a more deeper combat system. If you increase the health of players, then suddenly you can't just right click until you win because the other will have time to roll away and rethink their approach, especially with their new roll mechanic.

The combat systems everyone is asking for works in their respective games. Not for a huge conflict scenario like Eternal Crusade. I don't want to have to worry about pressing the right melee button when I'm knee deep in enemies and split second decisions are all I have. That's not fun. It's not fun to be cut to pieces by my teammate next to me because he doesn't know which of the multitude of buttons he has to press to attack. I cannot fathom how slow and uneventful the battles will be if they took mechanics from Dark Souls and Medieval, especially considering the amount of players they are trying to put in the game. And if they continue to release content after the game has launched (unlike Planeside) then that's all the depth a game like this needs. New shit. Not regurgitated complex combat mechanics that only work in niche genres.
