OK Guys we have around 5 pages full of cleave discussion now lets discuss some other combat physics! should weather affect combat somehow? how should a char react when he stands near an explosion or get hit by a bodycheck? or what would happen if some was send flying and crashed into someone else?
I would like to see weather obscuring targets but as for effecting weapons im not too sure is a good idea. Heavy rain, sandstorms, and the like would hurt laser based weapons but i doubt they would have much effect on there weapons. Would be a lot of extra work if it only effected a few weapons. For explosions providing they survive you could have the effected party either dazed or thrown to the ground for a few seconds. I would assume if you hit anything while being thrown you would be dazed and take some damage.
well combat is not only weapons my son. the weather could affect your view, rain would shorten it, extreme heat could cause halzinations in the distant also your movements: rain would make the ground slippy, snow could cause random ice surfaces on the ground where it will be hard to stop or change direction
Visual changes i like, each you mentioned sounds good to me. Not sure about the ice but i would love to make a video of orks sliding about trying to fight with the Benny Hill theme music playing.
Exactly that, the point isn't being good at both, that's great, the point is using the appropriate weapons. If marine 1 is armed with a boltgun (2 handed ranged weapon) and marine 2 is armed with a chainsword and bolt pistol, making the assumption that the marines and players are both equally good at both ranged and CC, the marine with the boltgun should own the marine with the chainsword at range, but once it gets into CC the marine with the chainsword should own the marine with the boltgun. It's not about how good the player or the marine is at what, it's about giving the advantage to the guy with tools for the job that they are doing.
Defiantly weather differences on combat effects, slippery ground, limited vision, let's not forget day and night cycles, which factions are capable of switching to a form of night vision? Can Orkz see in the dark? I think a lot of it would also be covered by knock backs and stuns, get knocked off your feet for some reason, be it an explosion or surviving a powerfist it should take a few seconds to get up. Mortars and Earthshakers cause stuns in their AoE. The other thing to consider is morale, there are Tyranids and deamons (later on) that cause fear and terror and will cause even a Space Marine to run in terror with no player control of the unit. One of the effects of the Whaagh was being immune to psychological effects.
Well those of you that are in power armour can wade shoulder deep, slowly through snow drifts, while those of us in flak armour will be about ankle deep... Heavy assed SM and CSM couldn't cross frozen lakes due to being too heavy for the ice.
