So I was rewatching the in-engine cinematic (take this bridge, lascannon one dude, victrory blah blah blah) when I saw this: (Specifically what happens between seconds 37 and 47) And I had a thought. Co-op counter executions would be cool as hell! If someone began an execution and wasn't keen enough to make sure the surrounding area was empty someone could come up and counter execution them. This would obviously kill the countered enemy and save the life of the downed ally. Maybe it could even pick them up at the end of the counter execution with their bleedout meter pausing until the counter is complete like it does when someone is being executed. I know this idea would depend on longer executions when the devs have stated that the shorter executions are the new direction they're heading in, but I liked the idea of counter executions too much to not make a post. Of course counter executions won't be possible with the short executions, but still.
Counter-executions would be very powerful, but currently I can't even kill someone executing an ally before my ally is dead, so anything would be an improvement. I think it would be better if we could interrupt the execution by shoulder bashing the enemy, which would cause them to be dazed for a set amount of time, or some other way to counter the terrible executions we have right now (they are way to short to allow counter-play, but that is not what this is about).
Can we counter the counter-execution with a counter-counter-execution? Maybe set up a big chain where we get an entire match running up and executing each other in sequence?
I'm not seeing this as a good idea. The programmers have enough on their hands atm and you can stop an execution By shooting the enemy. If something like this would be added it would mean that next there would be backstabing and all short of different things. And also... if someone starts an execution and the execution is at the point where the swort is in you there should be no return from than. No the execution can be stopped at any point of the animation.
I understand this would be an incredible burden on the devs atm, but it was a thought I had and it felt wrong to just let it die there where it can't be given a second thought by the community. As for what you said about the point of no return I completely agree. Once someone receives a sword through the chest that should be game over for them. The old bolted execution is something I'm curious about though. Would someone survive being hit with the first couple of bolts before the round to the head or the torrent of fire unleashed by chaos?
Well, normal human beings would probably die from a bolt round regardless of where it hit them unless they got really good medical care really fast, at which point they'd probably still need part of their body to be amputated. Bolt rounds are tiny rocket-propelled grenades designed to go off inside the target's body. We kinda banned explosive rounds IRL for a variety of justified reasons. I dunno about genetically-engineered superhuman killing machines, space elves, or hulking green monster-fungus beasts though.
While it would be cool, i do not think it's coming soon if its coming at all Melee attacks allready interrupt executions, but i am unsure if the same should happen for ranged attacks... say you shoot at that enemy that tries to execute your ally only hit with 1 bolt and he can get to safety because the animation is interrupted... Your ally would still be dead, but you "saved" your enemy in that case, unless you can dish a lot of damage at once (PC? Melta?) Honestly, counter executions would be cool, but i don't see it happening all too soon. There is much more urgent content that needs to come (Eldar classes, Orks, wargear, etc...)
