?

Should the devs do away with cloth physics if it means we can get more cloth ingame?

So after the last Twitch, and the question about cloth being added being brought up for the 12356th time, it got me curious about something.

How important are cloth physics to you guys? I mean, if being fully physics based is the barrier towards us getting more cloth ingame, then i say to hell with physics, just add non-physics (or semi-physics/animated) cloth to the game. I have a feeling most people wont care if their cloth is fully animated or not as long as they can, you know, even have the damn cloth on their character. The fact that my Sorc is running around nude makes me a sad panda. Then i look at the current examples in EC today. We have the LSM Veterans sporting their little crotch cloth, and the Dark Angel Veterans even having the whole robe style to them, hood and all. I havent seen people actually complaining about these, even if they dont have a smidgen of cloth physics. On the other hand, you have the Warlocks robes which have cloth physics, and basically everyone and their grandmother hates them (probably cause they look like you wrapped your elf in torn up garbage bags).

So id suggest that the devs do away with physics and just open the door to more cloth in whatever inferior form it can be implemented so it isnt as taxing on the performance as full physics. For example if anyone played Guild Wars 2, half the armors there are either cloth or have some cloth elements, and barely any of them actually have full on cloth physics, they just are kinda flow-y when you move but its not really full blown physics effects. And that game has people fighting each other in hundreds vs hundreds battles in WvW.

    Thoughts?

Animated cloth items would be more sufficient than putting in overly complex physics based clothing. Physics based will just be too much effort for little gain and FPS loss.
  3. They seem completely advert to the idea of hand animating anything so I don't see how this will ever happen.

It's either MOCAP or Physics engine it seems. I doubt they'd book MOCAP sessions just to get some cape swishing.

Just get me my cloth in any form, Dire Avengers look stupid without their loin cloths on the front and back.

It also makes the shrine cloth icons they implemented pointless as most people don't even own shrines and even if they did they would see it maybe several times at most for a second in the loadout editor if they even want to change shrines in the first place, if they applied these to loin cloths then the time spent wouldn't have been wasted.

Ugh, MOCAP simply became a money drain for this game. The animations aren't even that great as MOCAP either due to distinct and obvious proportion issues from the first renditions years ago. The sad part is that i've seen better animations that had some real weight behind them from playstation 2 video games from 2001-2003 and they simply animated by hand and with reference videos... The current animations seem weightless most of the time.

Lets just hope they get down and dirty and just take a simpler approach with animating the cloth.

  6. I dont see how cloth is a problem. I was wearing cloth and chainmail on characters back in 2000 playing Everquest. In 2000.. ? whenver when WoW came out.

Just give us bloody robes, capes, chainmail(yes Chaos have Chainmail adorning their outfits), human skin stretched across our armor, tabards, loin cloths.

I"m wondering what's the problem or limitation with seeing furs adorning Space Wolf Armour and the various types(they have 4 or 5 variants) of Robes for Dark Angels. FULL LENGTH robes down to the feet.

He's talking about the implications of either having stiff animated clothing or physics based clothing. One is not as aesthetically pretty but simple and straight forward while the other is very complex and pretty but resource demanding.
  8. Do we need physics for fur and proper full lenght(to the feet) pelts? I could care less of my hair doesn't get blown back when I run or if my pelts dont flutter in the morning breeze.

  9. right so go with the simple stuff IMO until they figure out how to make UE4 work with cloth/physics.

  10. Yeah no game company, at least not one with a game that isn't exactly burgeoning with players, is going to waste time making assets/animations for a quick fix only to at a later time to completely remove it and put something else in that is even more costly.
