Tabletop-wise, direction is irrelevant, yes. Obviously, that would be game-breaking, and no one has argued for taking the shield in that... direction. And I think the line we're trying for in terms of lore vs. gameplay is "it doesn't have to be lore-perfect, as long as it's recognizable and fun." I suspect the Iron Halo will be along the lines of a second armor bar.

players like to run away even against shieldless bro. i'm not joking. i reach ranged people for fight and "oh he don't have the shield why? it's must be easy to kill" and i the don't manage to kill me fast or they don't die fast or i don't gel killed by friendly fire or they don't get killed by friendly fire... they RUN AWAY why??? i have a pistol a dumb pistol that do tons of damage why you run away? why???? and sometime they start to try to climb a box I HAVE a PISTOL i can shot you if you climb a box!!! is good having a pistol, allow to do things that the shield can't do the only problem is fighting mon.
Can you uhm... look at one of the latest patchnotes please... thank you... You could see that the shieldbro got balanced recently and now there is no point in any of those "NERF IT" threads so you're kind of late to the party... Like all those blames were about the shield before the nerf, now he is fine.
Only shield-related note I saw is that they were fixing the "shield held hilariously high" graphical bug. Not exactly germane to this discussion.
Honestly shield durability seems fine, melta and plasma was taking chunks out of it, Lascannon went right through it, heavy bolter chewed through it once he got close. Plus holding up the shield he walks so damn slow. Raptors and MoN seem to know to strike from behind... really the only fix I would say NEEDS to be done is fixing the nearly 180 degree coverage of the shield. If your trying so solo a shield bro with a bolter or heavy bolter, or standing there shooting at it, and wondering why he is closing on you and killing you... thats because they are meant to be basicly Mobile Cover, they are Anti-Range. Use teamwork and tactics...unless you believe this should be another game where you just run around maps randomly with your gun held out in the front going pew pew! got'em!
