Can Space Marines swim?

Discussion in 'Space Marines' started by GobMaw_HellSmasha, Oct 31, 2015.

  1. This is mainly a question just out of curiosity

Space Marines are suppose to be these nuts super human beings of Killy death capable of ridiculous nonsense

But do any of them actually know how to swim.

Forget the obvious answer of them sinking to the bottom of an ocean due to wearing heavy as hell armor, do they have the knowledge of how to swim

I don't think any chapters has an official swim test as part of the training so I think that would depend on if they knew how to swim when they were "normal" humans. The Space Wolves probably know how to ice skate, but Fenris rarely has any liquid water. The Blood Angels come from a desert wasteland so probably a no there as well. The Imperial Fist may or may not have any swimming pools on their huge space ships so no clue there. I bet most of the UltraSmurfs can swim because they come from a fairly earthlike planet. And those are just the chapters in EC.

    Is there any aquatic-themed chapter?

Ha, potential weakness to exploit ^^
We should organize a galaxy-wide swimming contest and check if any Space Marines come ;)

I think they should be able to, I imagine they're somewhat similar in use to modern commandos and they should be able to traverse water if necessary.

Imagine a guy 7 feet tall. 400 pounds of muscles and artificially densified bones. Your abilities to swim only grow with the square of your length-scale. Your weight grows with the cubic of your length-scale.

A human can stay motionless at the surface with a few light movements. A Space Marine would be so heavy that he would have to constantly flail around.

The Iron Snakes recruit from Ithaka, a world largely covered in very deep oceans home to a variety of sea-life, including the great Wyrms. Ithaka does possess significant landmass, including tropical islands and viciously cold polar regions. Iron Snakes are therefore able to train in a number of environments, although the sea is most precious to them, to the point where each marine carries a vial of Ithakan seawater with him when on active duty, and with which he anoints the soil of any other planet he steps on.

The Carcharodons are the only well known shark chapter but it is never suggested that they know how to swim. I think there have never been any aquatic Space Marines or anything aquatic based because it isn't a part of the tabletop game. As soon as GW releases a Battleship expansion to 40k or something like that, there will probably be some underwater chapters introduced to the lore.
  7. IIRC there is an underwater warfare or something like that in the HH novel " Fulgrim ". But can't tell if they talk about swimming marines.

Never seen it mentioned. Weird but interesting question.

Realistically their ridiculously enhanced muscle and bone density would be the biggest issue. I doubt they can out-float the weight of the black carapace and fused rib cage even with bonus lung capacity. They don't have any real fat (aside from a certain SW) and they're super dense compared to a human.

Kind of leaves me thinking that they would sink unless they actively swam to keep themselves buoyed. Shark-style.

If we're talking lore SMs with big ole feet and hands then I guess they could generate that momentum easily. If we're talking Matt Ward marines then they meet every Tuesday for aqua aerobics, fully armoured and while fighting off Ork Nobz with squig floaties :D

matt ward marine can walk on water.
  10. Well, Salamanders are generally aquatic beings, as are Carcharodons.

Space Sharks could go either way. I mean, they could be a species of sharks that live in space, and they wouldn't know how to swim, or they could be normal water sharks that went into space in which case they could probably swim.
