Clearly it wasn't openly as noone else in the galaxy knows, just the Dark Angels and the readers. It has also been HEAVILY retconned to suggest that the crew of the ship that killed the Templars were actually Fallen trying to get to Cypher. Same goes for the Inquisitors that keep mysteriously disappearing. That's why "what's her face" was freaked out going to The Rock in "Black Pearl"
