Might be a bit Young Adult but Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider and Power of Five series are good reads.
if you like books do yourself a favour and follow this pattern get a library card start at fiction section A read your way through to Z selectively repeat once youve figured out what you actually like
Well I gather that most people on here know what they like by now. So .. well ... my post was merely propaganda for the awesome books Erikson wrote
I've got them (well 9 of them in that series), he still wouldnt make my top 25 authors list though lol
HERESY and such .. But fair enough to each his own. I just cannot get enough of his books. The eye for detail and the enormous story he is weaving is amazing in my eyes.
The Hyperion Cantos, by Dan Simmons. I'd go so far as to say it's even closer to WH40k than Dune (except there's no God Emperor in this one).
Dune really is one of those books which should be required reading for any aspiring science fiction author, even if that might be only the first installment rather than the full series. Also speaking for science fiction: H.P. Lovecraft's works, specifically At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow out of Time.
I have a really old copy of Mountains of madness. One of my most cherished books. I also have a first press edition from the works of Oscar Wilde.
