The melee attack type, not the factional betrayal! No FF discussion here, please. Basically, you get behind somebody without them noticing and get a chance to do a cinematic, brutally damaging attack that is frequently a one hit kill. Dark Souls has it, Halo, TF2, Battlefield and lots of the other generic shooters have it. PS2 and Space Marine didn't have it, though in many ways they might as well have, since people tend to figure out "backstab combos" that are instant kills on the unaware, even when there's no precoded cinematic execution to activate. I'm actually kinda surprised nobody's brought this up before, since the game is using many other mechanics from the usual shooters and Dark Souls CC - I tried searching the forum and didn't find anything, lemme know if there's a thread out there. I don't really lean either way on the concept, so I want to hear what people have to say about it. On the one hand, it can be an annoying combat mechanic that affects long range classes a lot, and could have detrimental affects when there are so many people attacking in one area. On the other, it sure would be nice as a non-jetpack assault class to have a method of attacking silently and lethally. As a Striking Scorpion without the flight ability, it'll be tough to get out of a fight if you just charge in head on, but a backstab mechanic would reinforce the "ninja" role and encourage stealthy gameplay. Full squad coordination would also be encouraged and enhanced by the high-risk approach of backstab melee. I'm not putting this to a vote because I think this is something people might vote impulsively on, without thinking it through in actual gameplay effect or how many games it's appeared in. Theoretically this discussion could also apply to parries, drop-kills, and stunlock attacks as well.
Yup, something Dark Souls style will be cool, of course it has the downside that on my screen we might be facing each other and you still backstab me... that will be really infuriating.
Maybe it's not has hard to do as I think but I'm sure it's not as easy as you say. Anyway, mechanics like this or the weapon collision are needed to avoid people just spamming attacks, backstabs will allow experienced players to dodge or move around spammers to punish them, not sure if any of you played War of the Roses, but in beta and release you could spam really fast thrust with a spear, it was really hard to dodge and impossible to block (well you could but a few strikes and your shield will break), I would really hate to see something similar in EC.
It's like the lmb spam in Chivalry or feet stabbing. An experienced player will just duck and cut you legs off. Or jump over the feet stabbing
The spear was a mid attack, if you duck it will hit you in the face, if you jump it will hit you in the legs, afaik the devs were not able to fix it, they nerfed it and it wasn't as good but still, it was the noobtube of war of the roses... Personally I was playing as crossbowman most of the time, heavy crossbow and shield plus sword, I killed those noobs at 50 meters Going back on topic what I'm not sure about backstab is the time that it takes to do it and the damage that it does, the game is pretty quick (for now) at melee, if you need a couple of seconds to complete the animation you can get killed before that, also, how much damage does it need to do? we go all in, if you are dumb and spam attack people will oneshot you with a backstab? Maybe it will be way less complicated just to add a bonus damage when you melee someone from behind...
- this is precisely what I was thinking, its pretty hard to get back stabbed if one is part of a group that have at least a vague understanding of "teamwork" (like me ) . such mechanic would help to discourage "loners" to some extend. that being said, the back stabbing mechanic might turn backstabbers into "facestabbers" (which is a dick move) so facestabbing should be either not allowed, or there should be a mechanic on top that would deter a facestabber. personally I like the way stabbing is handled in BF4 (yes that right! again with BF4!!!) backstabbing is a sure kill move (unless a timely mate stops it "PEW PEW!!! got your back buddy !!!) but facestabbing offers the potential "stabee" an opportunity to "counterstab" a facestabber, totally up to the stabee's reflexes and skills. it isnt perfect but it works at so many levels. personally , anything that adds flavor and substance. the last thing I want is another generic run&gun kinda shooter, and the only way to do that is if the gameplay mechanics offer plenty of options and counter options.
You make it sound like discouraging "loners" is a good concept. And what is that facestabb? How can you facestabb someone? Isn't that a normal melee attack? I want to stabb people in their face. I just don't want them to die from one hit, if its to the face and not from behind. Or do I miss something?
