This now brings great concern to my attention as well. There's nothing I despise more than playing a PC game that's been dumbed down for a console port. I understand if the game originated on the console, and they couldn't afford to redux the entire system for PC. However, there's no reason we should be forced to use a limited amount of controls, counter-intuitive GUI's, and put-up with all the inherent imbalances. Which are all simply, streamlined for what exactly?
I play both PC and PS3 Space Marine. All you PC elitists are going to very surprised. very. I'm actually faster with controller than M/C because of "A constant attention to detail on performance and competitive play" It's all about muscle memory and training... M/K is a crutch for the lazy shooter and does not augument skill but hinder its development. It doesn't push a skill based mindset because it's too easy to master and not easy enough to define fine improvement margins. I'd say a good player could master any control mechanism as long as he dedicates himself to a higher degree of attention to detail in defining the growth of his performance. But I will be trying this game on both PC and PS4 to gain a deeper insight to the games built in limitations. That will be the defining period where I will make a real assessment on which is better for this particular game.
Its not an elite PC attitude. There's no reason console players can't get hold of a mouse and keyboard, or PC players elect to pick up a USB gamepad. Mechanically, its a dead-cert that mouse/keyboard brings a massive advantage in any twitch-based combat (which is generally ranged, in the context of FPS) - there's a reason why PC games never had auto-aim assist until there started being ports from consoles. Controllers simply don't have the same amount of physical movement space for precision and sensitivity that a mouse brings. And this isn't a small difference, either. I used the term 'massive advantage' for good reason - if you don't believe me, hook up a gamepad to a PC and play any FPS game of your choice against a passably good friend (Space Marine really doesn't count). I'm pretty confident that they will utterly, utterly destroy you. This is something friends of mine, who are both console and PC players, have tested between ourselves. Melee can be different, because depending on the exact mechanics twin thumbsticks can be used more effectively for 'pirouette' / circle-round style attacking as not only is it pretty easy to do, but you can keep it up continuously without having to sweep the mouse round. You also don't have to shift where your fingers can reach to because two are being held in position on specific keys to determine movement. From memory, I think this bore out in in testing that Behaviour has done so far with the working version of EC as well.
Why doesn't SM count? EC is going to be a lot like SM and will more than likely have a higher TTK than SM. SO I fail to see how SM doesn't count. There are tons of console players on SM that can hook up a controller to their PC and whoop the crap out of the majority of the PC community "with ranged weapons"
Can you actually prove that though?..... Every time PC and Console go head to head in any kind of shooter PC wins hands down.
I agree, unless Microsoft has changed their policy with Xbox One. It's mostly to do with them: 1) Wanting full control over everything which is on their network, including people's accounts. 2) They hate the idea of sharing games on their little ASP.NET LIVE corner of the internet surrounded by big security walls blocking out the outside and they hate having to communicate with external servers, like AOL in the 90s. They will be all like "No single server, separate one for Xbox Live!" That way they can force their own ToS policies on the community and be free to abuse their authority over the network. Did you know of the many cases where Xbox Live staff just randomly ban people in games because they don't like the way they talk over voice chat? Yeah, it happens. Sensible people would use a mute button, not try to control other peoples lives by banning their accounts for swearing over a microphone. There used to be some really good and really cool people working for Microsoft and on the Xbox Live Team, those people kind of were the only thing holding back all the current bad things happening. And all those people left the company sometime soon after the release of Halo Reach, a good few years ago. Was also the time I decided to no longer play on Xbox Live, mainly for that reason, I know what Microsoft is capable of without vocal prominent employees stopping them. I remember the days where people made use of the MUTE feature, the BLOCK feature and the IGNORE feature and it was encouraged they did so. People's accounts only got banned for serious offenses, not mundane toxicity.
Because I was using the example of twitch combat, which requires precision to succeed, as one where M/K vastly outpowers controllers. And Space Marine is not really a twitch combat game - at least, not in my view. Not a problem if we disagree with each other on that. Space Marine is, however, a good working idea for what EC may be like. So if a large number of players on controllers can quite comfortably annihilate M/K players - especially the majority of M/K players, as you claim - then there's no reason to believe things can't be balanced delightfully in EC. I would still be keen to see the developers test it extensively, though. Common sense suggests that the mouse will deliver a far higher level of pinpoint targeting sensitivity than a controller (this is purely a spatial issue) and so there is more opportunity to be precise at greater levels of sensitivity, which is almost inevitably more useful to ranged players than melee. But tell you what, we could both call up tons of hypothetical players who could hypothetically achieve anything against a group of other hypothetical players. I'll resort to the slightly more old-school approach of scientific investigation - because this has been investigated and tested multiple times: Natapov et al. [1] compared user's performaces with Nintento's Wii Remote and the Classic Controller for the task of pointing using Fitts Law. A standard mouse was used as a baseline condition. In comparison to the mouse, both console controllers performed poorly in terms of throughput, speed and error rate. Klochek and MacKenzie [2] used a three-dimensional environment to compare an Xbox gamepad with a standard pc mouse for the tasks of tracking a moving target with and without acceleration over several seconds. While both tested devices performed equally well in tracking the target's velocity, the mouse allowed users to accelerate faster in order to correct errors in position. Isokoski and Martin [3] measured the performance of a wheel mouse, an Xbox 360 gamepad, a keyboard with a standard mouse and a trackmouse in the task of FPS target acquisition. All settings using a mouse for aiming performed better than the Xbox 360 gamepad. I could go on, there are a number of other studies with identical results, but I think I've made my point. It doesn't mean you can't create a game that balances the two, but you have to design the game with that in mind (ie, limiting the impact of the mouse's natural advantage in targeting). Hey kanthric you read the last part? you took it waaaay to personal ohhh and guess what this isnt your typical FPS game (its not even a fps) and if you seen the alpha footage you know whats coming and yup i agree with you the mouse and keyboard can be more precise but what does that help if you lack the skills? And space marine not counting?! what heresy are you speaking of! Ohh and challenge accepted when i get some FPS games on this comp il gladly play, i used to play in another PC but im just enjoying space marine at the moment, after all it all comes down to options, preferences and skill, i choosed a game pad, you choosed a M/K belive me if you think you have that much of an advantage over me your gonna be surprised. See ya on the battle field heretic!
