While I understand why people wouldn't want lock on to be removed completely, paying for it sounds about right.
That way, you are encouraged to put time into learning how to manually aim your melee attacks, while people still have the option to use a massively simplified version of a melee system.

This would also make not using lock on into a more viable choice from a purely balance standpoint: while people with lock on will have much easier time hitting their targets, people without lock on can potentially compensate for that by having better builds.

no you actually cannot if you begin firing a non autolock pistol it disengages the autolock.

your other thread is all about how you cant stand meleeing against a power fist user, and using and abusing autolock is one of the BEST counters to that particular loadout ...... as the power fist does not track well left to right. a simple diagonal roll makes you the combat dictator in an instant. being able to instantly either auto lock or use autolock to snap you to the silhouette for free aim fire on a non autolock pistol gives you free time to dps them where there only option is to rmb again in the wrong direction or wait slowly until they are on target again.....

in that particular engagement the auto lock actually assists the tactical in fighting the melee main more than it helps the melee main. As well as the specific circumstance of limiting JPA and SH motion if you autolock and wingclip them its like a 3 second or more stun in total between the fall animation and resultant animlock to impact and then resultant stun afterwards ...... Your exact complaint in the other thread could be solved by the judicious application of the mechanics surrounding autolock.

the best melee players only use the autolock feature to snap to they dont hold it down the whole time because autolock can be as much a liability as it is an asset in a lot of cases.

here ill give you some examples ::

Here is a non autolock assisted DIRECT HIT that doesnt damage them because it wasnt autolocked.

Heres autolock completely beefing a clear and straight path to an enemy.

explain to me how exactly you could hit this when you cant even hit this WITH autolock.

this has been mostly cleared up in the low latency areas but stff like this still happens in europe from time to time.

and finally heres the "completely infallible noob autoaim" in all its glory :/ gimme a freakin break.

don't get me wrong i get what you are saying ..... but the game technically doesn't work well enough to remove the feature. if you could hit your fragging target with melee attacks WHEN YOU ACTUALLY HIT THEM we wouldnt need autoaim. we need autoaim because your opponent isnt were you see him, you arent where you see you, and you didnt move where you thought you did in regards to the server ... autoaim targets the servers opinion of where your enemy is .... alleviating this problem.

no amount of practice or skill will remove the game technically failing and your hits not counting. THAT is why people use autolock feature because they are tired of helicoptering attacks into people and them not counting.

Uhhh, doesn't do that for me. Maybe my keybindings are different and that's why I can do it, which shows the stupidity of it. My keybindings put my melee and parry on my thumb buttons while my aim(Hold) key is on my right click.

So I can hold right click and it locks onto an enemy and then I can tap left click to fire and thumb key to melee.

It doesn't break lock, even when using Grav pistols, plasma pistols, regular bolt pistols, even the fusion pistol.

This basically makes the smart pistol obsolete, and quite a few people do this. Now, recoil does affect it but if you're careful it's fine.

So, you're wrong, I do it all the time.

doesnt work for any of the 60+ members of my guild ... it will snap to but when you fire the autolock will disengage ... the red retical will still show but it will not track until you stop firing and re engage it.

you could fan back and forth between the 2 but its not as accurate as you might think .... and is pretty poor RoF/DPS

show me video of your plasma pistol tracking while firing, and ill buy it.

to clarify it WILL auto track UNTIL you fire because its assuming you will melee.... but once you fire a non smart weapon the tracking feature disengages and you have to engage it again. and autotracking still suffers from recoil too. and spread .... it was actually a major problem when orks first came out because UP was so short of silhouette from COM that the 3rd or higher bolt pistol shells would all miss due to recoil. They in fact moved the center of mass for autotarget down on orks to a little above the gut for this reason.

i would honestly prefer it as a game feature to an equipment choice and just make it drop damage by a percentage for using it so people could use whatever sidearm they want ....would certainly help tac variants in CqC if they could choose in high mobility situations to reduce say mercury pattern bolt pistol damage by 50% to keep up with a fast moving target but then later after the debuff wears off use it as it works now .....

i think it would hurt the games balance to take it out, because circling a melee specialist with autolock is one of the safest ways to counter them adding up that flanking damage while you get into position for a kill stroke makes it much harder for them to pinball ftw .... guaranteeing damage on them will wear them down eventually. if you take autolock away .... JPAs still have the advantage of ussually getting to line up thier first shot but you have no way to track them while they buzz around.... i think this would further tip the balance to JPA's over the present setup ....

thier whole thing is that they generally get to be the fight dictator, autolock means if they make a mistake you can become the fight dictator they HAVE to take that damage even if they jet away they will get winged by some of the rounds and possibly clipped, without autolock you will see JPA's get away more often and dictate the engagement EVEN MORE because they always get to choose when they are vulnerable with no speedy tracking mechanism.

really think about it logically who does removing autotracking benefit the most ? the fastest guy on the battlefield .... and the most agile and maneuverable. .... i think its a really bad move in our current meta.

If it were ever an actual option on the table yes, id also like to see the autolock go for both melee and ranged.

One wonders how it will work though, considering how ungraceful our melee system is ingame.

I'll see if I can get you video of it.

    Edit: -_-

So, did I just never notice it not working? Wtf is this, LOL.

You got me there bud, I was wrong, I just thought I was using it because my aim is so good. When I finally went in, locked on with right click and then fired it does indeed unlock. I suppose I just wasn't paying full attention to the red circle this entire time.

I honestly thought I had been locking on while firing my plasma pistol. I'm actually an idiot.

    My deepest apologies.

On another note, not locking doesn't bother me a bit.
    Ghostile likes this.

hey don't get down on yourself, its not like they really cover it in depth in a tutorial, or in the description of any of the weapons .... that could certainly cause you some dps drop though and hurt you in CqC if you didnt know it.

experimentation and reviewing recordings is the only way i found out about a bunch of stuff in this game ..... not everyone is going to or should have to ..... the tooltip/tutorial/and damage reporting system needs to be a lot more clear and conveyant to the players .....

I would imagine the RPS system would still play out at is does, this is just some extra icing.
