I get that. My Warmachine Mercs are going to be pink. My Dark Eldar have white hair, grey skin and bone coloured armour. I mean heaven forefend that I use an official scheme for something. :D
We can paint our models in whatever colours we want. However, we're not painting our own army but joining somebody else's army. So we have to wear the uniform they give us.

Aspect Warriors are all for uniforms - they have ritual armour and weapons. So I would not be surprised to find that Auzor's idea of set colour pallette's to chose from would be the way this game goes for all the factions.

If I'm playing Ulthwe I'll get one set to tinker with, if Saim-Han then I'll get another.

Given my experience of MMO games over the past few years I fully expect them to do that. They did it in WAR and Space Marine to name but two. It seems that Behaviour want us to be coherent armies, not a rag-tag collection of e.g. Marines. That's why they are talking about sub-faction traits, Wolf priests replacing Apothacaries, etc. The developers are strongly hinting that they want to enforce the flavour of each faction. Given that, I don't think you are going to be allowed to push the envelope is such a radical direction.

  2. Alright guys remember your in my area and insults are not welcome here. Everyone has their own idea of what color scheme the armor will be and that is part of what makes 40k so much fun in the table top version my Eldar will not look like anyone else's Eldar unless I copy someone or they copy me. The Craftworlds do have a set color scheme but just like all people take different looks at how to paint the army's you will find that you might find some variation in what you see in game that differs a little from what the basic colors you might expect will be. This is fine as bE has to get approval from Games Workshop so they are getting permission from the top to make some aesthetic changes. Lets wait till we see the Eldar models to make some judgement's.

I do not know how colour customization will work. But I'd imagine that just because I am under Ulthwe's banner, it means I am automatically restricted to having black and white as my only colour choice.

For instance Howling Banshee from Ulthwe wearing Saim Hann colours of red. Guess that would break immersion for a selected few individuals I will not name that absolutely despise that and want the traditional Craftworld colours enforced on everyone.

Well there are different Aspect Shrines with those colours. So you might find a red/purple or green Banshee running around. Maybe the customization comes from making your own Aspect Shrine? Who knows. The fluff supports it anyways.

Will that make you non-Eldar looking? People won't be able to distinguish them? So those unique looking Banshee helmets I wear isn't enough to know what I am playing or the symbols I wear? For instance: if I coloured my Romulan Warbird aqua, the colour would be strange. But it still be Romulan in design, you can't change that.

No where did I say I wanted neon colours. Maybe all colours are unlocked and some must be earned, but you can only ever use a selected few. Three or two if some are upset about this. So I find it hard to deny colour customization at all, just because some think I want to look like the rainbow.

I support triadic colours. I'd like them all because I like seeing different colour layouts and not everyone looking exactly the same. I really want to choose my own primary, secondary, and tertiary colours. I don't want to be a white Eldar [Insert joke:transformer].

I understand that you don't want everybody to look the same but the point I'm trying to get across is twofold.

Firstly, that it's kind of an Eldar 'thing' when it comes to the Warrior Aspects. A squad will have the same uniform. An army will have an overall, cohesive look.

Now I doubt that BE are going to be that strict but as I've tried to outline above I think they are going to stick to restricted palletes. A general 'Specific Aspect' one and then a 'Specific Craftworld One'.

BE do seem to be pushing towards a coherent look and feel for each army. Having Aspect Warriors running around in e.g. an Ulthwe Guild with golden armour is going to look out of place.

OTOH, it is entirely possible for there to be mixed Craftworld Guilds...but even then I suspect that there may not be a huge range of colours...certainly not to what I would call the 'extreme' that you are asking for.

In the DoW games we got to play our own army as we do in the TT game...so we could use whatever colours we felt like. In EC we are playing individual soldiers in an army - while we are individuals we aren't allowed to express that except within certain parameters.

Then I guess I want my own squad. If that makes any sense? I get that people want the official look, but can't they make their own guild/squad and promote that original colour scheme there?

How about silver and red? Or green and red? Or is that still as you say out of place?

Having a bit of gold and silver, with red garments is extreme? Jeez... well that's harsh. I was going to have yellow mane for my mask, but I guess that's 'extreme' hopefulness. It's either red/black mane or leave 'my way or the highway'. Maybe I'll just stick to paint on paper, and leave it at that.

Well you guys enjoy the Clone Wars. I'd suggest having Arc Troopers/Commandos, but I guess that would get me taken away for individualism in a military coherent army. :(

Right now I feel like Sean Bean in Equilibrium, caught painting his models gold, silver, and red. And then shot for breaking the official look, that some seem to say is the 'proper old-school way', whatever that means. o_O

There's also this, Eternal Crusade is aiming to have narrative for the Warhammer 40K universe lore which probably played a part in coloring decisions. So having random color schemes around, which would represent custom chapters/craftworlds and such, would disrupt that. As Zoatibix pointed out we're a part Eldar Craftworlds/Aspects with their own colors and any sub-faction differences attached. Space Marine (game) & Dawn of War color changes were in a multiplayer arena setting with no story and thus no attachment or dedication to an army at all outside of "I like this color/motif theme." Or mods... I would like to erase the memory of Captain "Joker" Titus. Also Captain "'murrica" Titus.

I figure we'd pick Craftworld or Aspect primary color (I'd think gems would always match craftworld) then choose secondaries & trims from either. Could even be different shades of that palette so long as they don't cross into others. Which seems tricky for Saim-Hann and Altansar.

I wonder though if different Eldar armor can get different color patterns? Like 1 chest armor is standard color pattern all in the craftworld primary color with whatever other little bits. Then another chest armor has the shoulders with secondary colors and whatever other patterns for more variance. Or maybe shoulders are already being treated as separate. The RTS at least suggests they come with the chest armor. Which I'll likely be annoyed with in the future.

That's interesting, yellow mane for the mask. I personally wouldn't run with that because to me the red mane is signature to the Banshee and I'd even say a white helmet is too. But still that item on a character could be considered a secondary/primary piece to some. So I wouldn't mind seeing that but within a craftworld/aspect that would enable it. In the case of Eternal Crusade currently that would be Iyanden.

Also gold is a common trim color among Eldar isn't it? Or only for Seers? At least I've mostly seen it used on Seers like for the decorative rune bits on their chest.

However with all being said here, even what I said, too much color customization leads into if one faction gets customized colors then all factions should. It's not a question of lore at that point but gameplay features. Which opens up a mess of barking I don't want to get into. Not just because this is an Eldar thread. But for such a topic is a battlefield of wordery that will last forever and ever going in circles.

    .

I think the thing I find odd is that you are choosing the craftworld noted for end dark and Sinister and then wanting to have bright shiny armour.

Picking colours is important to me. Part of my choice in factions has been down to what colours I already have. E.g. I only wanted to play Blood Angels for Supa Mon Keighs which discouraged me from picking Saim Hann as I already had a 'red' character.

For me, if I wanted a 'golden' armour I would have chosen Iyanden as they are likely to offer a rich, sunny yellow. I wouldn't have picked a craftworld renowned for a different and very particular set of colours.

Obviously we are different people...I am just trying to explain why some folks see you choice as odd.

Edit: Sorry...texting on bus to work. I would point out that although we are more likely to be restricted in terms of colours we will have a greater range of weapon and armour customisations than we did for the 'grunts' in Dow.

I don't think you should give up hope given that we will be able to have a squad containing e.g. a Chaplain, a Master of Relics, and a Terminator led by a Legionnaire of the Damped. .so any kind of oddity could fly!

But there seem to be strong logical reasons for the position I am arguing while yours comes down to a personal preference.

In fact I think your example of the ARC Troopers is probably what we're going to get. I.e. majority of armour in one colour but a choice of secondaries. (I actually think we we will get more than one main colour choice, as I say)
  9. Idrial Idrial Menial

I picked the Craftworld based on their story. Not for someone to dictate to me what colour of underwear I'm allowed to be wearing, because they like to see me in that based on their preferences. I'm just going to agree to disagree, and we shall leave it at that.

I want some creative freedom. Even at this point I'm not allowed red in any shape of form as Ulthwe, it must be white!! Even though my Aspect Shrine has RED!! There is probably different shrines with their own set of colours to open up something to us. But a few are hell bent on saying No!! Just because they want everyone to look like them. That's the whole argument in the bag here. Nobody can have custom anything, because Rodger will have a tantrum if he has one teammate red, one silver, and the other green and he is the only black Ulthwe at the moment. It will break his immersion for 'his' army.

It looks like in any case leaving the trend in any small detail of colour is unacceptable for you guys. At that point it seems you want customization to be limited to only weapons, with no colour and just dim pre-set swaps.

I wanted at least primary and secondary. Two of you don't even want a secondary, and one person wants it to be restricted to one colour, but with different tones of that colour. How many different tones of blacks and grey can you get?

I could be here all day discussing this. I understand you want everyone to look like you in colours, so you can say we are one army. I wouldn't want my Romulan ship not to be green, because it's their species colours. But fluff supports that there are different Shrines with their own individual colours.

And there's no such thing as "too much customization."

A few hate me for having metalic gold. So I made my D'deridex gold, just for giggles.:p

Oh dear, why do you tempt me so to write replies that would get me banned.. :p

No-one here telling you what colour of underwear to wear; depending on non-uderwear looks pics welcome.

In-game, no one will see the underwear color of your character anyway, so you can RP it. *
    *unless.. dark eldar, Slaanesh etc.

    "managing expectations":
I personally do think the game would be better of if I can tell at a distance "that's a dark angel", "that's an Ulthwe eldar",.. (or in eldar case, perhaps more so the aspect),
    however:
I think myself and Zoatibix are also trying to estimate what will likely be the case.
Given the current direction the devs seem to be taking, "Golden Banshee" as in "Golden body armor Ulthwe Banshee" seems very unlikely.
I've made a post with a question about color customization in the founder's lounge for today's stream; maybe it'll get answered, maybe not: Marine/Chaos questions may have priority etc.

    About fifty :D
    Realistically, take "blue" for example.
Using a 32-bit color scale, you have quite some variety in blue colors.
But some of those would look strange used on armor..

Some cosmetic customization would be cool, yes.
At the moment, I'm not sure we'll get any color customization.
The dev-team might think cosmetic customization more in terms of squad markings, runes, eldar gems on armor,..
I would like to have some color customization, because I don't want to be
    Snow eldar,
    Lemon eldar,
    Blood Eldar,
    Emo Eldar
    or Red-Purple eldar myself..

Again, some customization would be nice.

No such thing as too much customization:
    Yes there is,
    Pink eldar, Neon eldar,..
see my earlier post with Planetside 2 "Hearts" camo: Pink camo with red hearts on it.. in a "this is war!!" game, with up to 1000 people on a single continent..

Star Wars the Old Republic: (an online MMO RPG; like 'WOW')
People playing tank in a female character, wearing the slave bikini from return of the jedi,..
the now very many weird lightsaber colors, pink armors, ...

Also FPS: ornaments like big spikes on shoulder armor, big horns on helmets, or a "kewl" big cape.. :
this is bad in terms of hitboxes: should a hit on those parts count? Then the hitboxes become complex. Pick a different helmet? Different hitbox...
In planetside 2 again for example, there is a class called "MAX"; bigger, meaner, etc.
The hitbox: the weapons don't count.
This leads to a few angles where the max is shooting around a corner for example, and you can't hit him because only his weapon-arm is showing.

    Another point:
all customization needs to be encoded.
Good visual customization will not save a good game.
Hence, the core game should take priority encoding.
It is "easy" to give more customization after launch, but very difficult to take it away again if needed. (pink ultramarines)

Also: it can take up processing/memory power.
If every Howling Banshee looks the same, there is a relatively small "library" for the game.
If everyone can make completely free color schemes, add trinkets etc that must be shown to other players, that has a big impact on the performance: now there are for example 10.000 possible looks for "Howling Banshee".
Consider the amount of classes, the weapon options, the movements, effects of being hit/...,...
Small trinkets would then have a cut-off depending on graphic settings and distance to you for whether a specific player sees them or not; increasing calculations that need to be made etc.
