Aspect Warrior Visual Customisation

On the subject of helmets/war masks there is lore for and against aspect warriors going without helmets.

In Path of the Warrior war masks are said to be a mind state Eldar can enter independently of their physical masks. However in the same novel, the ritual donning of their physical masks is shown to be the point where the protag was "Korlandril was no more. In his place stood a Striking Scorpion of the Deadly Shadow". The book is pretty inconsistent with this because on the very next page he is shown introducing himself to an exarch as "Korlandril". Great writing Gav.

In Imperial Armour volume 11: Doom of Mymerea (pg 145) the donning of the helmet is said to be essential: "The helmet is regarded as the most significant part of an Aspect Warrior's armour for once the mask is donned, the Eldar within will hide himself beneath what the Eldar refer to as the "war mask". Essentially, the individual's consciousness is subsumed into the gestalt warrior spirit of the Aspect".

Also, the Munitorum entry on Banshee Masks (pg 35) says the "war mask is as much a metaphysical concept as a physical artefact" suggesting the helmet is important to the process.

Personally I really dislike the idea of helmetless Aspect Warriors, because it undermines the idea that their gear is an extension of themselves and that donning it is a special ritual. If the devs decide to go with the Gav Thorpe fluff I'd be disappointed. I do understand they want to give a lot of customisable options, but I think that's one to be avoided.

As for what they can do instead they can have back banners, different colour schemes for different shrines/craftworlds, different runes, pendants and maybe even the old 2 edition armour designs (that'd be pretty cool).

Maybe half helmets then? Like Autarchs or the old Guardians. It would also be needed for Striking Scorpions and Howling Banshees otherwise they would be Mandiblaster-less/Scream-less :p Is there Dark Reapers Range Finder in the helmet?

Yes, Dire Avengers are the ones with an advanced targeter on their shoulder. If you guys are thinking about aspect warriors with no/half helmet can we expect a lot of facial customization?

I frankly concur that Aspect Warriors should not be able to go helmet-less, it might conflict with fluff. And Warlocks seem to need the helmets to properly use their Psychic powers, at most Guardians should be free to choose, but I don't think they'll be playable.

I guess the best choice IMO, is like I mentioned earlier, it should be an option for players outside of the battlezone. Maybe it's okay for other factions, but it just doesn't seem to match for Eldar players. Maybe if our character's face carried over to our Elite and Heros classes, then it would be cool to see them as an Autarch, which could be seen helmetless.

mental/psicological mask not the phisical helmet, it's how a path work. it's the mask that kill not the eldar.

    There's also this head:

Which actually comes standard in the Dire Avengers box. It doesn't get much use, but apparently it does happen. Of course, you wouldn't want to forget the Aspect shrine symbol painted in blood on their forehead!

Good point, I had forgotten about that head.
  8. Firstly, I think (as some people do here) that for Aspect warriors turning off the mask shouldn't be possible while on the battlefield. It may seem a bit coercive, but IMHO the lore states quite clearly that an Aspect warrior cannot fight without his mask, and that justifies such an exception to the traditional "helmet on/off" that we have in numerous games.

    Secondly, about Aspect armours,
    • I think that Behaviour's armour designers should take direct inspiration from existing GW designs to create color palettes for each Aspect. That would allow us players to be able to customize our character’s armour while staying true to the Aspect’s main visual identity.
    • as proposed above (I don’t remember who has) it would be nice to have some variations in armour pieces (several different chestplates, backpacks, helmets…)
    • It may also be interesting to have for each Aspect some kind of “color presets” that players could choose instead of (or as a basis for) customizing the armour’s color piece by piece
      • standard presets
      • craftworld presets (maybe one or two of them for each craftworld)
      • maybe one FP preset
      • Personnally, I would tend to strongly encourage characters of the same Aspect inside a Squad/Force to choose the same preset when going to the battlefield : that would give a visual harmony which would remind us of our tabletop figures squads :)

Thirdly, an important part of customization may be IMHO about gems, runes and/or other patterns, which could be set on
    • weapons
    • helmets
    • and maybe even on main armour pieces

Finally, everything here seems to have already been said in previous posts, so I only add my voice to the ideas I agree with.

I have to slightly disagree with the above. Old fluff stated that not only was the specialized range finder for the reapers in the helmet it was also connected to their weapon itself.

IMO All armor for the Eldar is supposed to be customized especially those within the war casts such as the aspect warriors, Exarches, and all the seers. Unfortunately in a game such as this I don't think it would be possible. There would be just too many cpu cycles that would be wasted that could be dedicated to the combat side of the game.

For me the most important things to see for the eldar is that just at a glance you know it's Eldar. Helmets have to be tall and adorned armour has to be formfitting. As for the customazition I would love to see:
    • personal banners (preset designs)
    • Glowing soulstones (waystones)
    • personalized color schemes (overtop of the craftworld colors)
      • Have to be able to tell what craftworld they come from
    • and every Eldar should have a personalized Jetbike!
