The Rock/Paper/Scissors system can work but the attack effects and weapon tiers need work. Each attack- Fast/Charged/Defensive needs to be specific (and actually work) and have definite Pros/Cons all affected by the weapon type/tier. They need to be balanced based on weapon tiers with mods to speed/force and stability based on the weapon used. The system was designed around weapon tiers and force and stability. The tier/force/stability aspect of melee weapons seems broken with the removal/reduction of stuns- if this was more of a factor then melee would be completely different. If animation speeds were adjusted based on weapon tiers a smaller damaging weapon would be faster/ more responsive and a Tac and Dev would have more stability and less force while an assault would have less stability and more force. The tiered bypass system suggested by Laanshor coupled with removal of durability and movement I frames- movement I frames and even to a lesser extent attack I frames are a big detriment to the existing system (mitigation I could understand but straight up I frames are just unrealistic even in a fantasy setting and introduce more issues than they solve).
So I just read some of the new threads and postings on the forum, when I noticed that I read one sentence quite often: "There are so many threads about melee these last days, ..." Indeed, there are quite a lot of threads about the actual melee system. And in almost all of them, the messages are clear: People are not happy with the way it works right now (besides things like the block, that GW won't allow...). And: People give good and constructive feedback. What I think is important: Not only the few guys that always complain (in any game and community) post there, but also people that have been following the game for a long time now and are known to play and test melee a lot. I think this is very good, since this game is in EA and alpha right now and people are supposed to playtest and give feedback. But somehow I do not have the feeling (and please take into account here, that I am not part of the EC discord or any other place, where veteran players are in regular contact with Devs) that the Devs are seriously considering those arguments against the current system. I mean I can understand that in some way, as there are so many big projects like Eldar and Orks that need to be pushed. But I think that since melee is such a big and important part of Warhammer 40k and EC, it should really be on point in the final game. So, do you guys think it would make sense to start some sort of petition to show the Devs (in a constructive way!), that the current system is not going to make the players (veterans, Warhammer 40k fanboys, people that just pick the game up on Steam,...) happy? I think it would be nice to have this one answer at the end of the petition then, if the Devs actually consider and have the resources to change the core mechanics of the melee system. What do you guys think?
I think we should wait until the next patch. Brent has said that their will be changes to the melee system. Alongside that, I think the current system has promise, but it just isn't working how its supposed to yet, and I am gonna reserve final judgment until they get those bugs ironed out and see what it is actually like. Aside: I would personally like to see a loadout cost associated with lock on targeting, available for all classes (because I don't use it and I want an advantage?).
If we could get all the clanging rules, target lock, rock/paper/scissors rules, as well as every other melee rule, all working in the same patch, I think we'd have a pretty descent melee system. The thing is we've never had all melee rules working at the same time. Will we ever see all rules working at the same time? Until then, who knows if our system is great or bad, we've never actually played with our system working as advertised.
