I'm just starting out as a player after watching this game for ages (Dev Twitches mostly) and I'm pondering buying one of these. Are they the magical balancer to give LSM more of a chance? I don't see many people using them and I seem to be on the losing side 80% of the time so I guess not. Any Grav pros care to weigh in?
If you are scared of LSM being the underdogs, let me tell you they are not right now. The only downside is mostly bad randoms who dont play the objective.
If you're good with it, like any weapon in this or any other game, it's deadly. If you're not good with it, it's rubbish, like any weapon in this or any other game. There's a certain PG player who appears to have made the GravCannon their own and when I see their name I rethink my loadout. As to being a "magical balancer" the only balancer in the game is experience. Play more, gain XP and Req, unlock your boxes, use your mods. In all seriousness the best weapon in the game is the modded bolter (drum mag, textured grip, heavy barrel) but it takes some play time to unlock them.
It's not a magical balancer, it's not a straight forward face-melter like the ABD's Grace, but if utilized well it is a great set of weapons. Like emphasized it is meant to be a support weapon. One team mate gravs people/vehicle, others gun them down. The recoil makes it hard to use but it does good enough damage and slowing effects.
I've been using Gravgun and Grav cannon for a long time, cannon is AMAZINGLY GOOOD, no melee will ever get to you, even JPA if you aim well. Grav gun also hardcounters all melee(one true LSM weakness) and is amazing at supporting melta troops for easy kills. Weapon got lower DPS then bolter, but it makes opponents life a nightmare, if for example you play with 2 friends using bolters and you yourself use grav gun, no melee will ever threaten you, it also makes hitting Eldar super easy and makes it hard for opponents to aim if you yourself aim for head to "blind" them with effect. Its amazing support weapon, not primary killer. There are unique versions on top of that, which boost different aspects of gravs in useful ways.
Grav Gun is good if you have someone to wombo combo with. It also has a really gruesome execution. Grav Cannon is for when you've stopped giving a fuck, provided you know how to aim.
Alone, almost anyone will outshoot you, and you'll get rick rolled. It will take alot of skill in the game to actually do well with the weapon. Get a single, a SINGLE, ally willing to stick to your shoulder...and you become captain kick-ass against 90% of your enemies, even if you are fighting 3 enemies against your 2. If you're looking for more of a solo weapon system, go for the the mods on the Bolter. If not, then go Plasma Gun if you can aim, and you can pace your engagements to mostly 1v1s. If another class instead of Tac, then get the Dev's Lascannon.
Thanks for the replies. I've treated myself to one and tried it a few times. I've not done well with it, and see the slowing effect as pretty minimal but I think I can see it's potential. It's also coincided with the modded bolter suddenly working for me so that is a negative against it that isn't it's fault. I do have one friend IRL who plays (but isn't enjoying it really, this game is pretty anti n00b, I think I just got over that hump) so might try to do it with a dedicated wing (bolter) man. Any tactics to it's use? Aim for the head one presumes...
