I don't really think there should be per say limit the sizes of dreadnoughts in a battle, because a 'battle' is a pretty nebulous term that's really hard to describe. At what point does a skirmish become a battle? The main issue really is that unlike the TT, there is no real corresponding mechanism to really force participation. Nor is there really a mathematical argument that corresponds to a points equivalent. If a person shows up to a warzone and isn't in a group, then he should be automatically invited to a group with spots open. Squads, or groups, should then be able to join any other 'open' groups to form strikeforces. This automatically would mean that you have some restriction on how many dreadnoughts will be fielded. I actually think in that regard that being a dreadnought shouldn't be tied into some sort of strikeforce level currency either. Strikeforce currency should be spent on support items imo, and not on allowing one or three players to play a class that they've spent time in building up on. I just think that's colossally unfair now that I think about it. I'm all for some sort of personal cost to field it though; like; some sort of kill count or objective count. Then again, logging in for the first time after a hard day at work and having the freedom to just launch straight into combat as your Dreadnought does have an appeal. I don't think that should be prevented because someone would cry foul. Life isn't fair, why should a game be fair 100% of the time? Why shouldn't a squad of Orks be mercilessly crushed because a player just drop pod assaults with his Dreadnought? In fact, don't we want the Orks to piss and moan to get some of their mates to join in or maybe actually stop banging their heads against the wall and assault somewhere else? Because it's unlikely that they'll be fighting Dreadnoughts all over the shop if there's some serious restrictions in getting there in the first place.
I dont understand what you mean by cost, do you mean you will be a space marine normally, and then buy a dreadnought for the duration of a battle then becoming a space marine again? I remember that you would like ppl to permanently become dreadnoughts, but then, what should cost? You pay requisition to go to battle? I think dreadnought should not cost anything, it should be a hard to obtain class, with a one time cost, either to you or to your guild. Alternately, it should be a one time cost to your guild, and then you are dreadnought for the campaign(two weeks?)
I've been led to believe that the developers have stated that there would be some sort of money 'requisition' system in the game open to strikeforces in order to get things that will aid their war effort. My original point was in line with that that you outlined above although I personally think that 'cost' to field your character in an apparently limitless MMO to be frankly the stupidest thing I've ever heard. At the end of the day, if Jim and Bob are playing and Bob was the one that busted his ass to get the requirements to even becoming a Dreadnought, then he should have free rights in fielding that dreadnought even if Jim helped out occasionally. The trick is is to make them if not hard to get, then at least a bit tedious. People talk about 'skill' but frankly I rarely see cases of true skill being displayed, pointing the mouse crosshair cursor over someone isn't skill at all, no matter what some would profess. Assuming this is true, then the only other way is to put some sort of system in place to reward single minded dedication in getting this perk; the Dreadnought, which should also offer some compelling reasons to not actually become a Dreadnought in order to put some sort of artificial restraints to help reduce the chances of a massive Ork waagh running up against 30 Dreadnoughts in one 'battle.'
I agree with all your points. It would be cool if it was a class unlocked in lategame, but you sacrifice your charachter, and can not revert back. And i imagine most ppl would like to be able to change roles and class, so maybe only the truly dedicated would be a dreadnought forever.
I was going to wrte a long post detaling how most of the ideas posted here are bad game design, but then I remembered I hate writing on a phone and that I trust the developers to be good game designers. Brent already said in the combat thread that they wnt be putting such artificial restrictions on classes like terminators and hero classes. They will be restricted with the cost to spawn them, like maxes in ps2. And not everyone will take them simply because they will be BALANCED, like every class in the game. Sure, dreadnoughts have great firepower, hut its easy to hit them. If people want to pull 30 terminators in a battle, devs will let them. However, a more diverse army would be a lot more efficient
Some good points in this thread. A dread should definitely be a rare occurrence. I am thinking more along the lines of this... A Dread should be paid for out of whatever resource points the WC has to spend. So for example the WC wants to take an objective and it is important enough then they want to assign a Dread to a battle. The points cost for the Dread can be deducted from whatever resource points that the campaign has. As for choosing who gets to play the Dread this should be random before each battle. Maybe a box pops up that says rolling for Dread pilot who wants in? You can click yes or no. After the 30 second timer is up a person at random is chosen from the list that said yes. This would eliminate the problem of a single person being assigned a Dread for an entire campaign and then hardly ever logging in. IB
I happily refer you to an earlier thread on this subject for other opinions http://forum.eternalcrusade.com/threads/dreadnoughts-in-eternal-crusade.4626/
This game needs Dreadnoughts! 40K with out dreadnoughts!?... get out of here! Every 40k game iv played has had dreadnoughts number one thing they all had in common
Does anyone pay attention? No one 'gives' you anything, you want it you can get it yourself, the idea of waiting to be allowed to get to use a vehicle or anything like that is stupid and ruins what this game is trying to achieve.
