  1. I think TARL's point was that the devs want anyone to have the possibility to kill anything from the lowly infantry to the biggest tank with the correct amount of skill. A lascannon or an autocannon could be taken by a devastator or maybe a tactical for a higher points cost, but what about other classes:
    Assault?
    Apothecary?
    Painboy?
    Stormboy?
    Raptor?
    Sorcerer?
    Fire Dragon?
    Swooping Hawks?
    Dire Avenger?
    Howling Banshee?
    Striking Scorpion?
    Warlock?
A decent answer for each of these and yes, playable fliers are completely ok...

(How about commander abilities for req, such as bombing runs or NPC driven transport etc, instead? A signal flare or equivalent would mark the area and then it's bombed. Much simpler :D)

my guess would be if transport aircraft were included the high RP cost would be a foregone conclusion,

if attack aircraft are included then they would need a lot of work to be balanced at least marginally,

I can see the reasoning behind the use of transport aircraft and its possible vunerabilities in its usage, both make sense to me,

until we see the maps and how we might be able to access areas with ground transport or other means though, its a very hard call as to wether they would be required at all,

A big part of the open world system is negotiating that terrain on foot or in a ground vehicle and the dangers that that entails, having the ability to pop from one location to the next is far from to be desired.

Add to that aircraft would also have to be treated like all other vehicles, you would be spawning them from some form of hanger of depot not from your inventory in the middle of nowhere, so they have to begin at a viable spawn point to start with.

    again your making assumptions,

we dont know the landscape or the maps,
we dont know if theres "cover",
we dont know where we will spawn in relation to a goal,
we dont know if certain routes will become "highways" to traffic as respawns are forced to funnel towards objectives

Well of course it'll have to begin at a viable spawn point. The idea is to not have spawn points every 10 feet, so you actually have to put some thought into how you're going to get from your spawn point to wherever the fight is. Hopefully we could also create incentives for people to not always just spawn as close to the fight as possible, but instead strategically spawn further back and use transportation to gain an advantage.

If using /suicide and respawning is so efficient that it renders transports obsolete, then we have a serious problem with the spawn system.

Agreed, I just get the feeling that some people want flyers to essentially teleport to where they need to be with no danger or effort.
  7. Rasczak Rasczak Subordinate

Well there definitely should be danger and effort. If we have aircraft, logically we should have good effective anti-air weapons. This would include possibly lock-on missles, and flak cannons.

Additionally, aircraft should generally be vulnerable to small-arms fire. Most aircraft have AV10 on at least one facing, meaning bolters can damage them. Though obviously a heavy bolter is preferred. The Flying Land Raider (Stormraven) is obviously an exception, but that can be adjusted by making sure it's fat and easy to hit with autocannons (which will shred its AV12).

AA weapons need to be sufficiently effective that pilots are entirely dependent on their speed to survive. ;)

Yes we do. We've seen a heavily urban environment with some open valleys in gameplay footage.

If Behavior just makes a completely flat map with no elevations, outcrops, rocks, or foliage, we have worse problems to address.

Doesn't matter at all on the subject of aircraft.

Also has absolutely nothing to do with how CAS will/would function in EC except for the subject of attacking convoys in enemy territory.

having seen a pre-alpha outpost and a nice 2d picture doesnt constitute seeing the landscape or maps

having rocks and stuff we have to move around while /walking/running/driving isnt cover...a forest/jungle is cover,
tunnels and partially collapsed buildings with roofs is cover,

where we spawn in relation to the location of our deaths does matter, since it dictates the direction/location from where reinforcements and respawns are most likely to arrive from

and if reinforcements and respawns have to travel a particular route/s then they become a vunerable target for strafing/bombing runs from your almost untouchable attack aircraft

    heres a nice little example...

I'm in an attack flier, I've taken out a tank at outpost gamma and i'm out of ammo, so i fly back to base and resupply

returning to outpost gamma i see no vehicles but the battle for the outpost is still underway, the guys on the ground inform me the enemy is filtering in from the west so i tool over that way to suss things out,

i see a flow path of enemies coming from a spawn point (of some kind) and moving down through a ravine toward outpost gamma,

i circle around and lining my self up i come in from their rear and with a nice bomb placement i damage their spawn point and continue down the line of respawned enemy troops strafing the hell out of them, by the time they realise i'm shooting at them my heavy weapons have already cut them down,

out of ammo i bank left hit the afterburners and i'm gone,

    encounter finished........

1 attack flier : no damage

1 spawn point : damaged, requires repairs to continue operating/destroyed

10 enemy infantry : dead, severly damaged

attack run all in the space of maybe 15 secs?...tell me that isnt OP
