Not exactly. The sad truth about the setting is that, despite having ten thousand years of history to play with, every story seems to be stuck at either the beginning or end of that time period. Some tales have some chronological progression such as Storm of Iron (another Chaos book which makes for a good introduction) leading into the Ultramarines and Iron Warriors series, but as a whole the setting rarely moves forwards or progresses in any chronological fashion. Unlike the now sadly dead Star Wars Expanded Universe, most of these stories are taking place almost simultaneously during some point in 999.M41 rather than progressing on one after another. There are a few key events which take place during the setting which helped considerably to shape it, but you can find most of these in rulebooks or in Lexicanum's timeline rather than in true novels.
Did he even write any full length books? I thought he just did Codex fluff, which is of course half the problem since he wrote ridiculous(impossible) feats in offhanded sentences as if they required no development.
He sort of tried to. Half the problem with the codex supplements he wrote was that he effectively treated them like novels, focusing on individual characters over armies and trying to tell stories rather than the histories or developments of entire cultures.

If you want an amazing read about non marine things I would recommend all of guant's ghosts, then move on to Eisenhorn (its a little pricey on amazon) then to Ravenor. All are by the same author Dan Abnett who IMO is the best writer in the BL. Follow that up with the Ciaphas Cain books for a little laugh. Then do the smart thing. Read about Blood Angels (little biased here ) start with one of the HH Fear to tread, then the Blood Angel omnibuses. If you want background go with the horus heresy books, be careful there are some hits and misses in the series.
I remember owning 'Let The Galaxy Burn', and there was a story in it on how the Tyranids slowly but steadily infested and conquered a planet. Are there any books with a similar story, but perhaps a bit more fleshed out? Cheers in advance!
