Many people mistake cinematic trailers and gameplay trailers. Gameplay trailers are a necessity, they show how the game will look, they will surely be no matter what. But cinematic trailer is a short piece of story, shown to us as if from inside this world in which the game takes place. While I certainly think that trailer is the last thing the team should be spending money on, if they can improve their game with these money, I am still totally positive that in-game trailers will never be close to giving us real feelings. What? You don't get shivers down your spine? And this intro could not be done anywhere close by simply using in-game assets. It would lack immersion! And yes, a fantastic cinematic trailer makes people lean to the game, want to try it. I can't even say how many of my friends who never cared for these games or franchises were dragged into games when I showed them some great cinematic trailers, like the one I embedded here.
Ah yes. The trailer that got me into Warhammer 40,000. Oh how I fondly remember gazing at the screen, watching the scene unfold, drool surely hanging off the corner of my lip, as my eyes hungrily gazed at the action being displayed before them. My fingers clenched into tight fists as I sat on the edge of my seat, leaning forward and I remember saying... "This is awesome." On topic - At some point, closer to release - definitely make a 'cinematic trailer'. They feel oh so tingly. If we can invoke at least a thousand "This is awesome" reactions from viewers from their couches/beds/desks, I'd say it would be well worth the investment. Cinematics are good for marketing. Think of it as a lure. Then as they bite the bait, interested, they search up 'Eternal Crusade gameplay' or 'Eternal Crusade trailer'. And THAT is when you lift up your catch and say 'aha! Got you!'
While I do want both I say keep the money and work harder on the game. This will give a better gameplay video and squash a few more bugs.
Every self-respected game has two trailers :cinematic trailers must be an epic one allways, if it sucks the players will be disgust at the beginning (you dont whant that). Gameplay trailers are not neccecerly but allways nice and welcome So better do both or focues on the cinematic one.
i think its just the other way round if the cinematic shows more then is possible the players will be disappointed when they play it a gameplay trailer is the best way to represent the game cause it shows what you get and if its nice you willget alot of players
Personally, I love dramatic and engaging cinematic, no matter how many times I launch dow2 I still watch the trailer every now and then. That said, for me I only really like the cinematic if it shows a story of some kind, doesn't have to be much, but I prefer that over what we sometimes get which is essentially a gameplay trailer, but done to look more like a cinematic.
Your right but... a gameplay trailer can be made by players, but from a developer I expect somthing more then that.
i see your point but i think a gameplay only trailer will suit much more the transparent development policity of the devs but ya some eyecandy trailer would be awesome since all wh40k cinematics were awesome
