A Tactical Change, Chaos Space Marines

Discussion in 'Chaos Space Marines' started by The_Dokta, Mar 29, 2016.

?

Would you rather the chaos tactical class be named a variation of Chaos Space Marine?

  1. Yes, Change to (Chaos Space Marine, Chaos Marine, Marine)

  2. No, keep as is

  1. You have my support
  2. Many of us share that view, but GW rather clearly rejected all three names in the original submission. We don't know why, as Behaviour either chose to (or more likely, were not able to - possibly due to terms in the contract with GW) give us the reason.

I don't think anyone here, at Behaviour, or at GW predicted that the 4th most popular name (by a long margin, and barely ahead of many rivals) would be so avidly despised by the Chaos community. But, well, here we are.

I've also voted in favour of change. Chaos Space Marine wouldn't have been my preference given a free choice, but accepting we don't have a free choice and recognising that if we have to go with a name GW will accept that there's no way they'll reject the official tabletop name for the class, it's Chaos Space Marine all the way for me.

Do chaos tacs proudly call themselves and each other traitors?
"we need more traitors to fortify this position"
  4. It's a term which is only really used by the Imperium. Chaos Space Marines recognise that the Imperium considers them traitors, and they're not particularly bothered by it, but they don't refer to each other or themselves that way.

For example, where the Imperium refers to the legions which joined Horus as the Traitor Legions, Chaos usually calls them the Nine Legions. Where the Imperium refers to the Black Legion as traitors, they call each other Brothers. Where the Imperium refers to Sorcerors as vile heretic scum, Chaos refers to them as Sorcerors*.

When Chaos talks about traitors, it talks about its own traitors. Yes, yes, all irony aside, we have recognised groups such as the Thrice Cursed Traitors who are the various splinters of the Sons of Horus who refused to join Abaddon when he founded the Black Legion and scattered into the depths of the Eye of Terror instead.

To be called a traitor as part of Chaos, you need to have betrayed your legion or the Warmaster's cause. The Imperium, meanwhile, calls all Chaos Space Marines and Renegade chapters who've split from the Imperium yet not aligned with Chaos "traitors".

The name only makes sense from an Imperial perspective. While I genuinely believe it was never the intention of Behaviour to land the Chaos players with an Imperial slur for a class name, it's symptomatic of GW's default tendency to think from the Imperial viewpoint that they didn't even clock that this would be an issue.

To be clear, I don't think any of the chaos players have any problem with Space Marines or Space Marine players referring to us as traitors, in-game or outside. But when it comes to our own sodding classes, we should at least be able to use the names we have for them in our own sodding lore. ;)

*Except for Khornites, who refer to them as vile heretic scum.

got my vote for a change.

or we could just use the negative terms for each other. (corpse lapdog, mon'keigh and such).

i dont like chaos tacs being called chaos space marines (thats the name of them as a whole not unit specific)
we need a name similar to raptor and havoc
  7. Actually, it's unit specific as well. As an example, here's a source straight from the horse's mouth.

As I said before, in an ideal world where we had a free choice over names, I'd agree with you. But that's where we thought we were before, and we saw the three most popular fan suggestions shot down by GW (we presume because there was no prior use of them in the 40k IP) and Traitor approved.

We're not uniting behind Chaos Space Marine because it's the best name anyone could ever have come up with, but because it's a name which GW couldn't possibly disagree with, given it's the official name for the unit. I recognise that's an unusual rallying call for a vote for change, but we live in interesting times. ;)

For all its faults, Chaos Space Marine is indescribably better than "Traitor Marine".
