    Well, a majority of western society still teaches males to be male and girls to be girls, meaning society's expectation on the individual plays a big part in all of these ''interests'' we have and share/don't share. Tradition makes it hard for ''untraditional people'' to even discover they are interested in this or that, as it more often than not discouraged.
    I could go about this for hours, there are some pretty awesome studies on the subject ;)
