Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only...levels? There shouldn't be levels per se, but cosmetic items you can unlock.
Not only cosmetics but also weapons, perks and other stuff like that. In the grim dark future, there are no levels...only war!
If I play an Ork and I've played more than the people around me then I want my Ork to tower over them, if I play a Space Marine with lots of play time then I want him to be covered in purity seals and look like a veteran. Use that as an argument for or against levels if you want, I don't want 40,000 levels and I don't want Ork's the size of Godzillia
The idea is that after playing this game for a couple of years this would be a neat way of seeing how much of a veteran you really are. I really think as a player you should have everything unlocked within the first 100 levels or so. But space marines can live and fight for thousands of years. Why should that experience only be recognised for the first few ranks. With a regular system like in the game space marine the characters got to level 41. The level system didnt reflect all the play that I put in after I maxed out my levels.
If you put a bit of masking tape on your monitor where it displays your level you can write anything you want, forcing me to suffer because you want endless levelling is unfair. I just want my war eternal!
How is gaining levels at a fairly consistent rate throughout your career suffering? There should be no end game in an endless war.
I think this idea could be interesting, but it depends on how it's implemented, I like the idea of achivements for X kills ect granting cosmetic rewards, infact I think I read they plan to do that
I really don't like this idea. For one thing, leveling up will mean nothing to the player if there still are 34.674 levels to go, and the entire concept of giving the player a treat every two hours or so is to much of a proverbial hamster-wheel. In my eyes, this is literally one of the worst things in the industry, that you constantly need to give players some sort of treat rather than the game being the treat itself. Also, while I do not oppose cosmetics for veterans, they should not get "better" weapons. I wouldn't mind weapons with different statistics (say, an Ork Choppa that deals 30% more damage to targets that you've shot with your shoota before but deals 20% less damage against those which you haven't shoot), but veteran players shouldn't have plain upgrades to what those down the line have - it would unfair and utterly frustrating if a new players gets killed time and time again not because the veteran plainly has more skill, but because he has a fancier gun/axe/chainsword. As such, let the Veterans have their cosmetics, so that everyone nearby can see their oh-so-magnificient e-peen, but leave it at cosmetics and weapons that are not a direct upgrade.
The devs have already stated that there is no vertical progression (i.e. levels) only horizontal (unlocking more kit, loadouts, options etc) They have already adopted by far and away the best way of doing things.
Yes. The challenge is to make the game still feel like it's not complete once you unlock all of the classes/loadouts. I don't think Call of Duty's Prestige mode is even on the table here, but it's definately not the model for 'end game content' that I am wanting. I think the best type of thing after weapon/gear unlocks as far as progression is an achievement or challenge based progression. As mentioned earlier, earning permanent titles in front of your name, such as 'Battle Brother' or 'Mob Boss' even because of total amounts of kills, assists, or revives(?). I also like the additions of Purity Seals, or Skulls, Scalps, etc. and prestigious/glorious looking armor. I like to keep things simple in general, so that people will know what you have accomplished when looking at your character. For me simple will be better.
